My mum has decided to buy my family a Wii for Xmas (myself, wife 7 and 5yo) and as I know sweet FA about gaming (not played since Road Rash on my Sega Genesis)I thought I would throw it out to you kind folk.
What do I need to get? Especially regarding extras. There seem to be a lot of packages offering lots of unusual object that would not look out of place in a sex shop and my head is going wobbly thinking about it.
Any advice appreciated.

4 wiimotes for the whole family to play. I wouldn't bother with the stick on peripherals such as the tennis racket and golf club, etc, because they don't contribute to the game and are largely pointless.
Games wise, it comes with WiiSport which is lots of fun when you're playing in a group, but other games that are really good for people with short attention spans are WarioWare and Raving Rabbids. They're just lots of mini games and the kids will love it, as will you if you have a silly sense of humour. The rabbids still make me giggle and when my friends come round for a night out we sometimes start off on the Wii whilst everyone is arriving because it's fun and doesn't require much thought.

installing the homebrew channel and setting up usb harddrive booting. Then you don't have to faff about changing discs. Also your games only need to be used once (takes about 15 minutes per game to back up to the drive) then you can put them safely in a cupboard away from filthy child hands.
Its easy honest :P
*edit* Good family 4 players include Raving Rabbids, and Mario and Sonic at the olympics games/winter games.

Ah yes...er...what?
Is this some sort of hack to all sorts of illegal shenanigans? If yes, please explain - for research purposes only of course. (The Pete 'Paedo' Townsend Defense as it is more commonly known.)

but I won't lie to you, it is an enabler to making and playing backups which mean you could technically use it to be naughty. But I never would, because I have a halo up my arse honest.

Mario Galaxy is beautiful, a bit hard though
Excite Truck is fantastic, fast as fuck with great gameplay
Mario Kart may be a better racing option for the kids though, good fun, but better with more players

but found we play to be shit
So just buy controllers if they are cheaper than wii play
Don't buy the zapper its too big and annoying to use with both hands and the trigger ends up in the wrong place. If you want a gun buy these www.amazon.co.uk/Venom-Light-Blaster-Gun-Wii/dp/B000XAAPQG not only are they cheap but feel more like guns when you are killing zombies.

if only it had more to it
Find Mii is also a great game, and gets EXTREMELY difficult, better if there are a few people helping. Other than that is really is just a bonus disc and it is the controller you are actually paying for
Excite Truck FTW though!!
EDIT to say, spend the extra for teh sterring wheel controllers, they work really and it's the only peripheral i have bought...get two though, or trouble could ERUPT

Has anyone had any experience of getting their Wii chipped. I took mine in ages ago, but at the time the guy said the chips available wouldn't work on mine. Subsequently this has apparently changed

You can software mod through the sd card slot and it doesn't cost you moneys and you don't need to open up the wii. Plus I have watched two people at work chipped their wii. Its really fiddly and neither would do it again.

A wii is just boring after a month or two not enough games come out for it. Any attemp to play online is futile, The xbox is better value for money as the wii is just a gamecube with new controllers (which are expensive by the way)
But A Wii is likey to be a better hit with kids that old.

If your TV as the appropriate connections then get a set of component cables as it'll look much better if you can hook it up that way.
