I'm a bigot
I've been trying to make friends with people on my course, nothing bigoted about that. Two of them seem quite cool, don't take themselves too seriously in short, aren't bellends.

We've been getting on quite well until the other night - we all went out for a drink and after a few beers the conversation turned to the origins of life and our place in the universe.

Both of them believe in God.

From the moment the told me I knew I couldn't be friends with them, I just can't take them seriously as people, in my mind they might as well be medieval peasants. I am a bigot, I cannot accept anyone whose brain would reach the conclusions their brains have met.

talk amongst yourselves.

Ah, that little-known Doors b-side,
'People are Cunts'...
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 8:20, Reply)
I agree with you
I can tolerate religious people but I could never be really good friends with them.
I just couldn't trust someone who has never questioned their own existence.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 20:27, Reply)
And if they have,
but have come to a different conclusion to you?
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:12, Reply)
Then I find that
conclusion to be one that stops me being their friend.
As BGB says below acquaintance yes, but not mates.

Yes I might be a bigot, but so be it.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:16, Reply)
There are more religious people in the U.S. than not,
and even though I'm agnostic, I've learned to develop friendships with "The Christians".
I lay down the ground rules - you wanna go to church on Sunday? Fine. Dont' ever ask me to go with you.
That kind of thing.
It's worked for the most part. Although one particular friend and I have had some knock down arguments about the whole religious thing which has often resulted in us both getting kicked out the pub for the day!
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 20:41, Reply)
Agnostics piss me off too
Make your mind up!
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 10:52, Reply)
Lord save you, if you think He doesn't exist.

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 20:47, Reply)
I'm with you on this.
Worked with God botherers and most of them were ok but I couldn't be mates with them.

Acquaintance yes, mates no.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:01, Reply)
Really? Don't you find that a bit pathetic, if they're not forcing the issue you on you, why are you on them?

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:07, Reply)
For me it would be like being friends with someone
who was a racist.
Their mind believes that not white people are lower beings, godists believe in a magic man in the sky.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:13, Reply)
Not all racists are white.

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:14, Reply)
This is true.
My mate Havider utterly hates negros. Except the ones that are good at sport and who represent the UK in the Olympics.

Or boxing.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:17, Reply)
I employ a Sri Lankan who hates 'pakis'.
I haven't the heart to tell him that most of the British population could not tell him apart from a Pakistani.
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 10:33, Reply)
What's wrong with being racist?
(you'll see where I'm going here when you answer that)
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:16, Reply)
I didn't say that there was anything wrong with it.
Its that they are views so opposed to mine that I could not be their friend.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:20, Reply)
You ovbously do think there is something wrong with being racist, because you say it dramaticly opposes your view, thus implying you have an opinon on the subject
But I'll help you out, the reason you find racism abhorent is because in moderns society, no 'race' should be used to belittle someone, because everyone is different.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:45, Reply)
OK
I don't want to be friends with someone who has a view so different to mine.
My choice.
If you have a problem with this then I guess we just won't be friends. Easy.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 22:45, Reply)
We would have very little common ground to be good friends.
Just like I couldn't be very good friends with an ultra right conservative or a racist.

Or someone who doesn't believe griddle pans are ace.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:16, Reply)
Could you be friends with someone who you think is scary?

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:39, Reply)
Who wears a party ring as a monocle?

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:54, Reply)
Nope, you have _one_ thing that you're not on common ground on, and dismissing everything else because of that.

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:46, Reply)
I like to do a lot of things that a believer would find sinful.
I can't see a friendship lasting because of that.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 22:04, Reply)
Isn't this a family guy episode?

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 21:41, Reply)
American dad

(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 10:53, Reply)
I don't mind
I believe Steps are good, and none of my friends have abandoned me because of this. If they think there's a beardy bloke in the sky, good on them. As long as it doesn't make them nasty to other people.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 22:08, Reply)
I have friends that refer to hip hop as 'rap'.
Fucking arseholes, but either put it to one side or avoid them forever more.
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 22:32, Reply)
ah but there is such a thing as 'rap'.
50 Cent is 'rap' - Lord Finesse, for example, is Hip Hop. They are only distantly related - hip hop & rap I mean, not 50 Cent and the mighty L-O-R-D-F-I-N-E-S-S-E. They might be, I suppose.

Time to dig up a witty quote in the hope of looking like I know what I'm talking about.
It's about religion, but could probably apply to beliefs in general.

"Religion is very much like your genitalia: you shouldn't wave it about in public, and you shouldn't force it down your children's throats."
(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 22:51, Reply)

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 23:00, Reply)
I hate kittens

(, Sun 13 Dec 2009, 23:17, Reply)
But where did it all begin?
Which came first, the chicken or the cock?
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 0:41, Reply)
I can't see any reason
why you can't be mates as long as they keep their beliefs to themselves, and you likewise. If you haven't learned to accept that people will have different viewpoints to your own at this stage it makes you sound socially retarded.
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 6:19, Reply)
And that's a surprise here?

(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 7:06, Reply)
Merry Christ mouse

(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 7:59, Reply)
That's interesting
The fact that you despise people for their believes, considering them inferior to you, makes YOU a racist.

Are you going to stop being friends with yourself?
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 8:08, Reply)
How Bizzare

It must be nice to be as certain as you about life the universe and everything. It must also be nice to be able to dismiss the vast majority of people in the world who believe in a God, Deity or a force beyond themselves.

But I find the breath-taking arrogance of you a little hard to take. You're dismissing potential friends because they don't happen to think *exactly* the same as you? And you call *them* medieval? Listen pal, the Crusades were launched by people who think like you do.

For the record, I believe in God. I don't feel the need to justify my beliefs to you or anyone else. You believe what you want, I believe what I want and the world rubs along nicely.

Hmmm. I wonder if you dismiss people who are a different skin colour to you as well.......

Cheers

I was asking myself the same
Maybe he doesn't hang out people who likes their steaks well done, rather than rare, because that's not "the right" way to eat a steak.

Or maybe he can't stand people who likes cheese and onion crisps, as they must be salt and vinegar, obviously.
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 9:18, Reply)
he

might have a point about the crisps though.....

(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 9:25, Reply)
I won't try to convince you

But I like mine ready salted.
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 9:28, Reply)
I
think Salt 'n Shake is the way to go but thats because I'm a traditionalist
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 9:31, Reply)
I like those too
Not fancy flavours for me.

Although on Sat I tried the chives and chees mini pringles and they were more than good.
(, Mon 14 Dec 2009, 9:39, Reply)
Surely
if they believe in a man in the sky with a beard looking down and sorting everything out every moment of every day, and making the Earth in the dark in less than a week, then they don't expect to be taken seriously though do they?

Personally, I believe in floating fairies doing all my work for me while I sleep, I just don't tell anyone as they'd think I was loopy.
