Right.
What do you lot know about comic books?

I'm looking for some new ones to read, and would like your suggestions.

EDIT: Thanks everyone!

For some reason when I read 'nimble fingers'
it made me think of that 'healthy' bread you can buy called Nimble. I had an image in my head of Chompy bashing away at the keyboard with bread fingers!
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:14, Reply)
Yeah...
that's what you were thinking when you read nimble fingers.

'The Beano' is tip-top.
As is 'Whizzer and Chips'.

Comic books/graphic novels
I really like the 30 Days of Night books. They're full of short comics about zombies and vamps, if you're into that sort of thing. There are quiet a few in the series and one particular story was made into a film called 30 Days of Night (its going to be a trilogy).

I also have Shaun of the Dead the graphic novel and that's ace! :D

I read a bit of Cerebus...

He was like a drunken angry Aardvark. Anyone remember him?
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:08, Reply)
Sandman Sandman SANDMAN
Yeah. That's all.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:12, Reply)
Good, but overated
and bandied around by too many folk who think comics are cool
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:27, Reply)
I love Gaiman, really.
The first comic I read was Sandman, followed by Watchmen, probably the most bandied-about comics ever.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:29, Reply)
Anything that Neil Gaiman's been involved with
is a good tip: Books of Magic, Sandman etc

Ditto Alan Moore - first things I read by him were "Top 10 1&2", "Skizz" and "From Hell" - I was instantly hooked. EDIT: Watchmen, of course. And League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Maus
300
Batman - The Killing Joke
Salem Brownstone - this came out recently, it's short but extremely well-drawn.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:13, Reply)
I've heard Maus is very good!

(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:14, Reply)
Maus is excellent.
I cried a lot though :(
I enjoyed Watchmen. Even though I'd seen the film, and knew the synopsis, there were still bits that I didn't see coming. And it's very cleverly detailed...
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:22, Reply)
DiT really liked Watchmen
both the comic and the film... I didn't mind the film so I might give the comic a go! :D

I have heard that Maus is really sad so am suitably prepared for this!
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:27, Reply)
I read the comic in 3 days.
I bet I've missed loads. But it's excellent. I enjoyed the film, but the comic is certainly better.

Persepolis is also good. Though that's definitely graphic-novel territory. It's novel shaped after all...
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:28, Reply)
Cool
I'll give it a whirl then! :D
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:30, Reply)
Drunken Bakers
FTW!
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:16, Reply)
Hrm. Never realy seriously got into comics
But there's a series of Xmen comics that Joss Weadon was doing, or at least was doing. Got some of them and they're good. Also, Sandman is increadable, Watchmen was good, and I can't think of the name of it, but there was a comic written about palestine/israel which I liked.

.
I would recommend Frank Miller, I love Electra... I would also recommend The Maxx. Its a strange one but worth it also Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid on Earth and Transmetropolitan gonzo journalism for the future.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:23, Reply)
Preacher.

(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:24, Reply)
One of my friends loves that.
That and Transmetropolitan. I've not read either, but apparently they're good.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:25, Reply)
It's a great series.
Cassidy is one of the best characters ever.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:35, Reply)
My aforementioned friend - who is Russian - was given a "Fuck Communism" lighter for his birthday
Apparently that's mentioned in Preacher...
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:39, Reply)
Once again: SANDMAN. PREACHER.

(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:27, Reply)
DareDevil: Visionairies
by Kevin Smith and Frank Miller is acness!

I read an awful lot of the Marvel 'essential' collections which are always good.

Marvel Civil War is also damn fine, and finsh that with The Death of Captain America.

World War Hulk was the last comic book I read and is also damn fine.

Over in the DC universe: The Death of Superman trilogy, Batman: Killing Joke and Death in the family are the only things I've read in the last few years (not a DC fan).

If you're feeling really geeky I highly recommend the Marvel Vault - a comprehensive history of the Marvel Company from the 1930s onwards.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:31, Reply)
the best comics ever
were Pete Loveday's 'Russell: The Saga of a Peaceful Man' comics.

I heard recently that his eyesight has deteriorated so badly that he can no longer draw. This makes me very sad.

EDIT: Shade the Changing Man is also good.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 17:31, Reply)
Read Invincible Iron Man: Extremis t'other day
it was pretty good if you like Marvel stuff. There's been a series of them recently, called I think Ultimate [Something]. Captain America and people like that. Not bad. Not as good as something like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen though
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 18:49, Reply)
I really enjoyed
the Ultimate Spider-Man series, but didn't get beyond volume 5 of the graphic novels unfortunately. Must try and get back into it.

Batman - The Dark Knight Returns is pretty awesome. Watchmen I found a bit overrated though.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 19:39, Reply)
I'm 31 not 13.
I used to enjoy Whizzer and Chips though.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 19:41, Reply)
bit late but
100 bullets, even thought the last one is a bit of a disappointment

Preacher and The Boys for the sheer daft violence and silliness of it all, but rollicking good reads, see also the first Marshal Law

Alan Moore is an acquired taste but the Top 10 and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are awesome, also the Ballad of Halo Jones
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 20:34, Reply)
Even later but
Y The Last Man
DMZ
Bone
Preacher
Transmetropolitan
V For Vendetta
Powers
Maus
Authority
Demo
Akira

There's a good mix of styles, art and content, and none of it features grown men in capes.
(, Mon 18 Jan 2010, 23:31, Reply)
Anything by
Jhonen Vasquez

Oh and what the others said about Gaiman, Moore and Smith and depending on if you liked Vasquez give Roman Dirge a shot. I also LOVE the Hellsing Mangas and obviously Akira. Any comic with anything to do with Star Wars is awesome! FACT!
