I have a moral dilemma
When I was with my old firm I started a law degree, which they paid for. I jacked it in after 2 years and eventually left the firm. They did make me sign something at the time I started the degree to say that I would pay it back if I left the firm within 2 years, but when I did leave they never asked me for anything.
Last night I got a letter from the uni saying that there is £400 still left on my account and asking if I want it back.
Would you be honest and tell them it belongs to the firm, or would you take it and hope no one ever finds out? If I took option b, I'm running the risk that if the firm do find out, they'll then remember that they paid for it and make me pay the whole lot back for being cheeky. So what would you do b3tans?

Write back and ask them to donate it to the student nightline charity. That way your old employer should not find out and even if they do, they can't accuse you of nicking it.

Oh dear, I hate being sensible.
Tell the Uni that the money was payed by the company, and does not belong to you.
You don't seem to remember much from the two years you actually were enrolled. ON A LAW DEGREE.

What do you mean I don't remember much from my law degree?
I'm aware it doesn't belong to me, but if it's returned to the firm that might jog their memory that they paid for a degree I didn't use, which was a few grand that I don't have.

OK don't help them by giving more info than you have to, but still don't take the money.

I'm so tempted but also really scared. It's not like nicking penny sweets. Maybe I should just ignore the letter entirely. But I'm ridiculously skint. Goddammit.

How long's it been?
If a company isn't efficient enough to remember to ask you to pay when you leave and let £400 slip through, it's hardly likely to have procedures in place to find out you've snarfed the cash. If it's been longer than a year, take it and spend it on corset-making materials.

My moral dilemma is thus:
Yesterday I phoned up a car showroom to enquire about a couple of cars they had with a view to going to see them on saturday. The guy said he would call me back with some more info, but didn't. Last night me and mrs al talked about the cars and decided that actually we didn't want that type of car and would instead go and see a different car at a different showroom if it's still there.
I think he just tried to call me, but I don't like taking calls from "Private Number" so I ignored it. Should I take the inevitable follow up call and tell him I'm not coming, or just keep ignoring him until he dies from starvation because he didn't sell any cars.

I quit my law degree after 2 years
so I'm not worried about future law practice. I'm mostly worried that if I do take it they'll find out and prosecute me for theft, plus make me pay back all my tuition fees. But if I return the money to them they could still make me pay back my tuition.
OH WHAT DO I DO?!
(
Kitty v1.0 desperately naive, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 9:18,

You say you quit that job AFTER two years
And "They did make me sign something at the time I started the degree to say that I would pay it back if I left the firm within 2 years". Therefore, they can't make you pay it all back.
Taking the £400 would be considered at best minor theft. If I were you I'd write a letter to your old firm, explaining that you've had this uni letter (enclose a copy of it), that you left after two years of employment there (no need to specify the signed clause, just say you worked there over 2 years), and let them chase their money.

I'm not sure if this is a 'morel' dilemma.
A moral dilema, I thought, was where you think about what you precieve is 'right' or 'wrong', rather than focus on the consiquences of your actions on a non-emotional basis.
I donno what I would do if I was you, not a clue, at your old firm, was there anyone highish up who you are friendly with, or at least, someone you noshed off and can now bribe?

My moral dilemma is this
Over the past 15 years I've committed an increasingly savage series of unprovoked attacks in my local park. I've never been caught but I'm starting to feel a little bit guilty, particularly after my last one, when I hanged a disabled man from a tree.
So do I confess to the police or just keep doing them in an increasingly sloppy manner in the hope that eventually I get caught?
