I'm signing the lease on a new flat tomorrow. I'm fucking terrified because I don't own any furniture and it's utterly empty, no carpets, cooker, fridge, washing machine - nothing. I'm having to borrow some money for the first time in ages to get it all together and in the meantime I'm paying rent on both properties - housing trust rules mean we have to start paying straight away else we lose the option. Thank fuck I'm not tied-in to two month's notice in our current place.
Anyway, this is just blatant beakering, but anything to push that cunting squid-sex picture down the page.

They'll be able to help you get sorted, and then you can upgrade things as and when you can.

If you've got the transport I'm sure you'll have no problem getting what you need.
Quite often there is free stuff on GumTree too.

Sounds like the start of good times for you. Very pleased to hear it.
What precisely is 'beakering'? Apples used the term the other day and now you have.

I only found out what it was all about when I saw A Muppet Christmas Carol when I was about 32.
I'll probably still watch that film when the kids have left home.

I think the humour was occasionally quite adult but the puppets were excellent. I love Jim Henson generally. If your kids have never seen The Storyteller, I'd highly recommend getting hold of it - Grimm and other fairy tales narrated by John Hurt and acted out by loads of excellent actors and puppets.

With the exception of the Sapsorrow story. Fuck me, that one was dull.

Have you tried charity shops? I got a sofa for $25 a few years ago in one...that's probably around 11p there.

which will be getting the lion's share of our money, I reckon.

the level of second hand furniture shops. There is a massive BHF that does more trade than argos.

I once moved into an unfurnished flat. I bought an inflateable chair, almost had an aneurysm inflating it and it was too small to be of use.
I sat on the floor.

it took every penny I owned. I had a sleeping bag, two floor cushions and a TV. No fridge, no kettle, no freezer.
But I had two decks, a mixer and several thousand records, and no ex (no, not THAT one). It was fucking GREAT.

My bed, and a DVD boxed set of Rambo films.
In retrospect, I'd have probably bought some furniture first.

and they had nothing. She said they survived my sitting on bean bags, sleeping in sleeping bags and eating tins of beans cooked by candles. I smiled and nodded while something inside screamed "Noooooooooooooo!"

I wouldn't worry about her doing without for a while.

although I have to be able to make a cup of tea. So I would have sold the sleeping bag and the cushions for a kettle.

I must be becoming inured to the internet. That squid-sex picture barely made me blink. The other one did elicit a bit of a grimace, mind.

what possible enjoyment could be had. I left the thread more baffled than disgusted.

anyway, congrats on the new place. Have a look to see if your council have one of those swap sites, you can then ask if people have spare sofas and things. There are a surprising number of things that people want to get rid of which are perfectly servicable

I'm going to the housing trust to sign the lease tomorrow, and I'll be hassling them for whatever help we can get. I mean, we've got to get carpet in. That's not the kind of thing we can take with us when we leave, meaning it's dead money as soon as we move in. I find this distinctly odd, but I'm not complaining mostly because the rent is cheap and it's a vast improvement on where we are now.

Congratulations, I'm really happy for you :)
Gumtree is always a good resource as well as Freecycle, or ebay. Ikea is good for cheap essentials too. Depends if you have a car to pick stuff up though I guess.
When's the flatwarmingbash?

Daughter's already looking forward to going to Ikea. I think we may have to settle in for a while before we consider letting you lot loose around here. Edit: Gumtree is incredibly useful, thanks!

Folk just want rid of stuff, as long as you can pick it up reasonably quick they are usually thankful. Check out the 'free stuff' section as well.
My pal just got a 32" Sony Wega for £40, ok its a CRT, but the picture on it is simply stunning.
