Catching a train and are baulking at the prices?
If your original journey involves at least one change, consider splitting it into several trips.

Case in point; my eldest has to go to Blackburn on Thursday. He will catch the 06:37 from Hull to arrive in Leeds at 07:35, there he will change to catch the 07:51 to arrive in Blackburn for 09:15. This will cost him £39.80.

Alternatively, he buys a single ticket to Leeds for £9, for the same train. Then buys a return from Leeds to Blackburn for £14.70, again catching the same 07:51 train. Then buys another single from Leeds back to Hull, again £9. This combination of 2 singles and that return will cost a total of £32.70, saving him £7.10 which will cover his bus fare from home to the station plus his lunch.

Agree on this but have no examples to hand
I was charged for arguments sake 120 quid cornwall to yorkshire as one ticket, buying I think, 6 singles all using the same trains cost about 52 quid, some crazy savings. There is a site that does it for you, was told it but forgot it.

This can work for flights too.
Plus, it allows you to use different airlines in the same journey which can add to the savings.

My aunt used to have a map of all the boundaries you cross where the charges change
She would split her journey up to make it loads cheaper, sometimes by 75% they would nearly always just send her a ticket for the whole journey.

also
try using mega train

My train travel for business is £200 a week return to london from liverpool. Cheapest if I buy in time is around £80 as I travel peak.

If you travel off peak with Megatrain Ive been able to get two returns mid afternoon for £14.

thats £3.50 one way! Its more expensive to use the local train to stop 5 stops than that!

Or....
Save all the money and don't send him to Blackburn, cos it's a dump. Although he could probably get himself a new pair of shoes from Tommy Ball's with the GBP 7.10 if he does go

i often stop half way through a long drive and trade in my car for a cheaper model. I've saved myself a fortune over the years.

I know someone
who bought a tatty old car incredibly cheap to drive down to Devon in, then scrapped it there. Given the price of scrap metal and the fact it was diesel, it worked out he was better off than if he had gone in his petrol car.
