This is how gin and tonic started.
The British out in the empire had to drink the tonic for the quinine but it tasted like shite so they put gin in it.

I've spent my entire* life thinking I didn't like the taste of gin. Are you saying I might just not like the taste of tonic water?

* well, maybe not entire life, although my granddad did apparently get me pissed on champagne at my own christening.

not sure if this is 100% factual
But I was led to believe that the English Raj used to mix gin into the quinine water in order that babies would drink the stuff. It later became a popular drink amongst the adults.
