Any suggestions on solar powered heating and watering systems for a greenhouse?
Some of you must have tried "growing" things IYKWIM

Greenhouses tend to be fairly warm already
apart from in the winter, when there's hardly any sun
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 15:57, archived)
There's hardly any sun at night, but it's still warm at night in the summer. How do you explain this?

Might be able to offer suggestions for other parts of the process but probably not this part.
Do you literally mean greenhouse, like an outdoor glass structure?
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 16:02, archived)
I do

(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:07, archived)
gaz mongy, he knows about this sort of thing

(, Tue 9 May 2023, 16:06, archived)
Don't bother
Solar panels take up space that would be better for letting in sunlight. Water in the morning or evening, but don't water the leaves, just the soil around the base, as wet leaves can scorch
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 16:09, archived)
He wants an automated watering system I think

(, Tue 9 May 2023, 16:12, archived)
I do
Like a little pump drip system
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:08, archived)
I tried a few things with my greenhouse
Water butt with submersible pump connected to a smart socket, tray watering with little float shutoff valves and a more ambitious project to link arduino soil moisture sensors to electrically operated water valves that I never got round to finishing
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:13, archived)
This is the sort of thing I'm getting at
But I think a little trickle feed solar panel with a storage battery for the pump/droppers and a small heating element to stop it getting totally freezing in winter.
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:33, archived)
I already have an overall temp/humidity sensor in the greenhouse, so I can get all smart with routines from that

(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:34, archived)
Fair enough. My greenhouse was close enough to the house to make it easier just to run everything off the mains.
Plus my greenhouse heater was a bitcoin mining ASIC in a home made water resistant server enclosure so solar panels wouldn't really have cut it.

Did you find any coins? or whatever the verb is.

(, Wed 10 May 2023, 2:24, archived)
I mined 3 bitcoins but the FBI confiscated them when they shut down BTC-E :(

Solar power isn't up to that yet

Surely enough to keep a battery topped up, little bit of heat and pump activity a few times a day?

I have a greenhouse AND a shed
What happened to your greenhouse?
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:12, archived)
Had to leave it behind at the old house.
The new house does have two fairly massive sheds though, admittedly in a state of disrepair.
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:15, archived)
Not quite shed and buried then?

Unless the greenhouse is in the Arctic/Antarctic or on the moon or Mars
I don't think you'll need heating.

You could paint the (concrete?) floor black
to absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night.

Or you could build a proper passive solar collector heat sink type of thing.

Are you doing soil or aqua? If aqua, fish or no fish?
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 18:01, archived)
Seems easier just to get rid of the greenhouse and rely on the earth's own solar powered heating and watering systems.
If anything the glass just gets in the way.
(, Tue 9 May 2023, 17:10, archived)
Seems better not to jog with limestone
If anything, your wall just gets in the way.

Yeah, what you need to do, first of all, is remove one of the glass panes from the greenhouse
Then snap it into a shard, and ram it down your japper. After that you'll be sorted
