best thing is to use bricklink
if you know what sets you have, it'll generate the individual inventory and then you can just tick off any bits that are missing, or increase the number if you have more of one type of brick. You can then export the inventory in XML or xls if you want to do other shit with it, like upload to rebrickable.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:12, archived)
I don't really want to rebuild the sets,
I just want to make it easy to find the right brick when building. Ideally sort by shape and colour, but there's so many different shapes that it quickly becomes useless. Think I wound up with one pile of bricks, one pile of plates, and several piles of "other".
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:20, archived)
But maybe I should just reassemble the sets, and then sell them off?

(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:20, archived)
how best to make the most of your limited time alive?

(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:27, archived)
Ideally, I'd enjoy my time on this earth a little more if I could restore some order to my household.
What I really want is someone to do it for me, however.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:32, archived)
don't ever sell them
but reassembling them is a good way to start. You'll be surprised how many bits have gone missing.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:28, archived)
I'd be more surprised if any of them were complete!
Batman lost many a batarang under the fridge or up the hoover.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:31, archived)
Also, why not sell them?

(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:33, archived)
1) unless you've got the boxes and instructions too, you won't get any real value from it
2) when you realise you miss them and want them back, they'll be exorbitant if they even exist at all. Most of my Technic sets cost more now than they did new.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:37, archived)
I have most of the instructors.
Trouble is, it all gets built once, played with once, stuck on a shelf, broken, chucked into a box. Despite being a wonderful, creative toy, nothing ever gets built as no one can ever find the parts they want.
I blame all these licensed sets, with their custom shaped bricks. The boys bought themselves a basic box of bricks, recently, and had a great time building whatever they wanted. Sometimes, less is most definitely more.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:51, archived)
yer, those custom bits are the bane of the business model
but every kit has to have one, or people might actually build what they want. Just spent the price of a pint on one fucking shaft to finish an old kit.
(, Wed 21 Nov 2018, 9:55, archived)

On the way to work this morning, I saw a big pile of bricks, all arranged very neatly and geometrically and interspersed with these frame things and some panes of glass. From a distance it was indistinguishable from a house.

The only one they had in stock was for a MacBook Air, with a 13" screen. One hundred euros it was, for a 13" piece of plastic.

what about that trick of pulling off the polarising filter and wearing special glasses?

My route to work goes through this imbecilic road-widening scheme, which of course has severely narrowed the road while it's going on.
It began back in the spring and is meant to be completed some time next spring, although at the current rate I can't see it being finished then. The site barely looks any different one month to the next. It's big enough to have a couple of hundred guys working on it and on a good day I see maybe eight or ten.

Clearly the council started it and then realised they didn't have the money to do it properly. Wankers.
