[challenge entry] Blunt... but to the point.
Especially if you check the image properties.

# Slightly nervous that this compo is creating images
which could be re-appropriated by scary men with no hair. Perhaps we should tag them all "Nick Griffin is a cock" to be on the safe side.

(A criticism of the challenge, rather than this image specifically)

It's interesting that - up until now - it seems no depravity is too low for b3ta, except racism and sexism. Sadly homophobia has always been rife. As an offender myself in this Image Challenge, if it's any consolation I'm pulling two of my images from the compo before it's over.

What disturbs me most is some of the comments are "hahaha I agree too" when the aim of the entries are supposedly to cleverly meet the compo's guidelines, not necessarily reflecting the submitter's own attitudes.

*Edit* done and done - I feel happier for it too.

# *sigh* agreed
I feel the same way about some of the images I've created, and have sat there a few minutes before hitting the submit button... or not, as I've abandoned a few that were just too much.

As I'm using Transport Posters the source is very much limiting what joke I can do (which is normally fun: be creative within constraints) - while this can't fail to be a reflection on my own imagination (if not my own morals); interestingly it's also partly a reflection on the general attitudes of the 1950s, albeit lensed through the image challenge constraints. In retrospect perhaps the challenge should have been MORE challenging by specifying "non-racist/sexist etc images only" - actually raising the cleverness of submissions (always good) while reducing the easy fallback of being offensive.

The only ones of mine I'm truly happy with only reference Tea, Sharks, and Hell. Much better than my Sexist and Racist ones, yet these are both rating by far more popular in the challenge - which is sad. I'm thinking of pulling them from the compo.

What disturbs me most is some of the comments are "hahaha I agree too" when the aim of the entries are supposedly to cleverly meet the compo's guidelines, not necessarily reflecting the submitter's own attitudes.

*Edit* done and done, images removed. I feel better about it now.

# "not necessarily reflecting the submitter's own attitudes"
...at least SOMEONE's realised I'm not signed up to the BNP.

But on the other hand, looks like I've finally got the hang of this b3ta thing! ;)
(, Sat 2 Feb 2013, 9:16, archived)
# I didn't think you were.
It was just a strong example of the sort of image that could easily be seen out-of-context as something it is not supposed to be, which it is hard to not do.
(, Sat 2 Feb 2013, 10:57, archived)
# I think careful tagging
can get around the problem to make intent clear, which yours I felt already were - I saw them as old-fashioned stereotypes rather than the sort of ones the EDL use... which is actually a good way to mock current attitudes by comparing them to archaic ones.

Never really seen b3ta to be homophobic, to be honest. People who have been clearly so have usually been flamed. Stereotypes get played with, but that is usually because they can be amusing in a way the average person isn't. There's a good South Park where there is a meeting of the gay community and everyone is very 'normal' apart from Big Gay Al and Mr Slave at the front, which I felt was their way of showing that there's simply far more room for fun with the stereotypes which is why they are disproportionately used.

But, yeah, with immigration (and I'd say the unemployed is the other area) there seems to be far more opinions expressed that I myself find troubling.
(, Sat 2 Feb 2013, 10:53, archived)
# good points
Agree with the tagging, but the idea that someone could intentionally take my image out of context for their own BNPesque uses was disturbing. The key thing for me is I wasn't entirely comfortable with the images myself, which probably means I only actually submitted them because I'd spent a bit of time making them!

I guess you're right on the homophobia, re-reading I'm not sure where I'm coming from saying it's "rife" - the Gay Robots challenge was as good an indication as any that the b3ta community plays with the subject rather than vilify it.

Anyway, looking forward to constructing some more images for this challenge more along the lines of "Britain is unattractive" rather than "You are unattractive to Britons".
