meep! what you going to do?
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:41, archived)
# that is inspired
OF course, if it is based on your own personal experiences then may I suggest pleading insanity?

;-)

# er no
it turned out not to be quite £1,000,000 so we just paid up sharpish and apologised.

This is what happens when you try to ignore the brown envelopes, kids!
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:44, archived)
# you mean the brown envelopes aren't junk mail?
shit!

# what's that knocking at my door?
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:46, archived)
# you should have paid in monthly installments.
mind you, londinium must be expensive for the ol' council tax.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:46, archived)
# too bloody right it is.
With the recent re-assessment of council tax bands, I got royally screwed.

And then there's the environmental charge for the maintenance of Richmond Park.

Still, I make sure I kill at least one deer a month and sell the venison. Got to get my monies worth.

# don't get me started
I've got monthly installments set up but they 'forgot' to take the money one month, so they've taken twice as much this month without any warning. It's lucky I had just enough to cover it.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:52, archived)
# Yeah, that's a great trick they play
I think they call it "Let's See Who's Overdraft Limit We Can Reach And Maybe We Can Take Them To Court For Non Payment And Get Some Extra Money From!"

Bastards.

Which part of the country has the lowest council tax then? I'm moving.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:54, archived)
# you can't after you get the court summons,
you have to pay in full, they said.

Bastards.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:50, archived)
# no, theres always a way around it.
say you can't afford it all, but are willing to pay, then get them to agree a level on which you will pay it back.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:54, archived)
# given that they were already court-summonsing us
we paid it. I wasn't terribly fussed about agreeing a level at which we could pay it back - we'll just eat beans for a while and be richer the rest of the year.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:56, archived)
# Yes, this is handy for whenever you have trouble repaying something
By Law, they have to accept any reasonable repayment scheme that you suggest.

This is how there are many people paying off loans at £2 a month for the next 400 years.

# at my last shared house we had court proceedings organised for us
fortunately someone had moved out and someone else in during the period so when I told them this they scrapped it all and started again as if nothing had happened.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:54, archived)
# or, as happened to me,
are actually owed £240 by the council but they've decided to lose all your student details _again_ and so charged the full council tax and threatening legal action to recover it.

It took nearly 9 months of going in person to the council with everyone's documentation before we got the money back...

The tenants in the house kept changing, every change required _all_ of us to prove we were students, and then _all_ sign a declaration that the overpaid money could be paid to a single person.

# This is easy...
...you sit there and shout "MANAGER. NOW!" and don't leave until you've had satisfaction.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:56, archived)
# But what if the manager isn't apealing?
Can you nominate a good looking subordinate instead to satisfy you?
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 10:57, archived)
# Depends on when the town's charter was granted.
Before 1215, no problem. Afterwards, problem.
(, Tue 5 Aug 2003, 11:05, archived)
# haha
let's hope councils don't surf b3ta looking for ideas...
