*cheeky threadjack*
My neighbor is asking me about some 'good animation software'.
I thought of Flash straight away, but now I can't think of anything else.
It's his xmas present so I'd guess he will pay for it, or if there's free ones or something, I don't really know.
Oh animating strange bunch of /Board, what say you?

Haha!
Virtual Dub is poo for anything unusual, format-wise, dahlink!
I use squared5 for conversions and now use AoA for extracting the raw audio data (because it is sooo fast)

Not heard of squared5, I'll have a look at that.
I've been using SUPER for conversion, but it's less than helpful when something goes wrong.

Indeed.
I use foobar2000 for audio conversion, but it's not well documented - audacity is excellent, squared5 is exc ellent.

Haha, I can imagine
he does paintings on a fine art degree, I think.

Jim has a degree in fine art and is a professional artist,
painting landscapes in oils (paints and just oils) and varnishes, but I'd never let her near any software I didn't want corrupted.

Tattyshop comes with Imageready (or at least used to)
but both are my favourite weapons of choice (cost a fair bit)
I've heard good things about GIMP (being free and all) but have no idea if that can be used for animating

IR no longer comes with PS
and in fact Adobe have discontinued it. PS10 (CS3) contains most of the functionality for creating animated gifs, but NONE of the functionality for importing and editing them. Adobe's position is that you should now use Fireworks to edit animated gifs. Unfortunately Fireworks is a bloated piece of shit.

really?
that's a bit cack. But yes, photoshop has most of the good stuff for doing gifs and decent optimisation controls

I agree, it really is cack.
PS10 is the first PS version I've seen which has actually lost vital functionality. I really hope they sort it out in the next iteration. It would be a real pity to see this trend continue... one concern is that they'll take out PS's vector capabilities in order to encourage sales of Illustrator. That would be a huge issue for me personally, and I definitely wouldn't upgrade.
