So the mods might be good at that.
Either way there's one thing that I can say they're very good at: Not trying to censor anyone.

If you're friendly and point out their mistake, they normally take it on board.

that's not so much what I'm talking about, it's more just when someone posts one or two pictures and then has a bunch of imaginary rules and people posting 250kb FAIL.gifs when someone posts a slightly too big picture.
MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST TRY AND BE NICER.

I don't get upset over a few k on a pic
but if someone comes on and posts something abysmally wrong, like a "why doesn't someone photoshop this it would be really funny" new thread, then I think they need to be shot down

But I don't think this is a practical solution.
Maybe people should be naughty stepped for excessive or unnecessary flaming.

I haven't seen much flaming just for the hell of it round here. b3ta is pretty good in that respect.
As for excessive...then you would be naughty-stepping an awful lot of regulars who are displeased at having their (or others) work pushed off the board by a noobie starting a talk thread or stealing an image.

I'd call that unnecessary, and much less productive than just being fluffy and pointing out their image is slightly bigger than it should be.

last time I looked is the GIMP pages were broken.
It may be worthwhile writing an optimisation guide for GIMP. I would but unfortunately while I'm fine with JPGs I suck with GIFS :(

it's more about making the point that there are image size guidelines, who really ever read all of the faqs before posting? in my own case i didn't even have a clue what optimisation was
and went over size by a wee bit with a couple of posts. it was the lovely ms tutt who very nicely pointed out the error of my ways and i made an effort to sort it out thereafter. not ms tutt you understand but my size issues.

i'm not trying to knock it much -- even though the photoshop bits are the ones that i've been able to read it's still helpful. there's a few things which are program-specific which don't work in the gimp (at least not for someone who doesn't know it well, which still includes me) which was my only real knock.

GSTQ posting his lemony link.
Someone saying 50kb only etc but not in too bad a way. (what I do, I've even offered to optimise a couple of times...)
There are a couple of twats that post fail, but not many
Then again, my bed time is about lunchtime in the UK and maybe I don't see it all.

When I joined B3ta it was about four months after first looking at it and I still made sure I waited a week before posting anything so that there wasn't a nice L plate. Because while in the FAQ it says something like "You get a learner plate so that people will make allowances" what it actually means is "Come on everyone! Be a cunt to me because I've committed the crime of not knowing that the 50k guideline is actually a capital law!"
Not everyone has as much time to burn as I had at the time, so most people don't do this "sit around for months" lark, and then they get about twenty replies to their first attempt basically calling them a retard (which is also, I believe, banned in the FAQ. Not that those who constantly shout "FAQ!" appear to consider all of it of equal weight.)

There is somebody really annoying on the board, is it OK to be rude to them?
Absolutely not. If you are really annoyed by another boarder, you can click the 'Ignore' button under their posts and everything they post will be hidden from you (you can always un-ignore them later if you like). Please don't be horrible to other people just because they are new, or you didn't like their picture, or posted something that bothers you. If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything.
If there is somebody on the board who doesn't know what to do, you can always point them in the direction of this FAQ in a friendly way (or use the secret code).
There are moderators about to deal with people who abuse the messageboard, replying to somebody calling them a cunt isn't very constructive and will just encourage people to keep trolling.

but I've only ever seen a good bumming given to those that post talk, spam, stolen or nsfw images and I think that's deserved, they should have read the FAQ and know not to do it. As for the 50kb limits there are some (no names on uncoded lines) that whip out a flail every time someone posts a 60kb image and maybe that should be stopped.

the gayshift is a bit more accepting, perhaps because anyone wanting to post fail pictures would run out of inspiration ten minutes after doctor dyslexia started posting oversized images on the board, or perhaps because there's not so many stressed office-workers on.

even if i must confess to generally having doctor dyslexia on ignore. it makes the board a slightly more aesthetically pleasing experience if you're going to be around on the gayshift.
on the other hand, it can perhaps afford to be more relaxed because there's fewer people around. if ther'es a hundred people trying to post then it's a lot more irritating when someone posts total crap and keeps the board moving so fast.

i seem to recall ignoring him in the past but he's certainly not on the list at the minute and i can't remember why i'd have ignored him in the first place. i've made an effort to take the whole thing less seriously in the last few months because i was becoming the kind of weird over-earnest freak that i normally laugh about...

fortunately most people tend to get over them and come back for more.it still amuses me how intimidated i was at posting stuff on here and how bothered i got ( fairly short lived) when i either got flamed or ignored, i was a 40 year old bloke, done a degree in art with brutal crit's almost weekly, never mind all the shit i'd get at work. maybe it was down to my total lack of knowledge about message boards and my ineptitude with photoshop. before i started on here i'd never been anywhere near either.
now you can all just fuck off if you don't like what i do.

we've all had some of those, mine are generally ones i've spent at least a couple of hours doing.
i love the vagueries? of the board. it's as much to do with timing as talent and of course being in with the cool kids.
i also prey that one of the 'star' posters or a complete numpty don't post directly after me, it's the kiss of death for any image.

that one took maybe half an hour or so to get looking half decent, mainly because i was a bit out of practice and it was hard finding decent blood without trying to draw it myself. as you say, it's part of the board, and when you post. and whether everyone loves you.

It's up to the person to check it out, look at how things work and join in - every now and again they might fuck up royally and might get flamed by some of the less patient members, but it's all part of life's rich tapestry and learning. Even places like "Hilda's Knitting Forum" is going to be populated by people who treat newbies who fuck up with some kind of contempt.
I personally think b3ta /board is one of the more fluffier areas of the internet.
Cliques, cliques, cliques.. They existed before the wheel was invented and are nothing new.
That said, if I was new and posted for the first time on the gayshift, I don't think I would ever come back.

They wouldn't bother working out who is nice and second, being nice depends on the post.
I don't flame simply because they have an L plate. I don't cry fail when a noob posts a 100kb still. I blast if someone starts a talk thread when they should know better. I pay out when someone posts a stolen image. I complain when someone posts NSFW and isn't censored.
Normally if a noob posts and it is a reasonable image, ie I like it, I will say hello, welcome and tell them they get a surprise when they click their L-plate.

"mods are lazy and have multiple standards."
I disagreed with your post up there ^ but this one's rather true... Something's blasted as NSFW because it contains the words "tits" and a quick sketch of something that looks vaguely balloon-like, but the picture of John and Yoko with cocks (which was ace and I clicked and enjoyed muchly) went by without comment.
Just depends who's around, when, and whether they're actually of a fair mind.

I went to bed and forgot to check up on it. I know it didn't make the FP. Did he get naughty stepped for posting fantasy pissporn? I doubt it...And yeh the Ono and John ones got through.
