ponds are deliberate
puddles are inadvertant. And a puddle becomes a pool when it's either: a) So wide that a good robust leap from a lithe girl of mid-20's age is no longer sufficient to reliably clear it or b) It becomes deep enough that a wellington boot is no longer protection.
