The original toy line was called 'Diaclone' sold in Japan. Americans went to Japan, saw diaclone (also microchange) and then brought that to America as Transformers. An ad agency thought it would be a good idea to make a saturday morning kids show to help sell the toys. And that is essentially the story of the Transformers.

The US ones (before Simon Furman took over), less so. It was many years later that I actually saw the cartoon when it came out on DVD, and, erm, the UK comics were great.
