Despite what we are all told, it's still your right to think that something is shit and to organise yourself to try and do something about it. Even if that something looks stupid and ineffective. Which it is.

(Besides the echo chamber these fuckwits live in),how many people are being exposed to these 'protests' and genuinely thinking "Fuck me, they're right. I'm going to completely shun any product that has required crude oil at any point whatsoever in either in its manufacture or shipping and live an exclusively oil-free lifestyle!" and how many people are thinking "These activists are fucking morons"?

Unfortunately, that's not a quality I've been blessed with.

We aren't going to make a unified global push towards true 'carbon neutrality' until our hand is forced. It's far too convenient living the way we currently do. I reckon we're far more likely to adapt to the current climate than we are in trying to enact any major change in our consumption of fossil fuels. Especially considering that crude oil is vital in the manufacture of just about every single mass-produced item on the planet.
How do we 'stop oil' exactly, when it involves completely overhauling the petrochemical industry and coming up with completely new methods of producing the vital medicines, composite materials and electronic components that we utterly rely on to continue existing as a species?
And more importantly, how exactly are these JSO fuckwits helping matters?

Just Reduce Our Reliance On Oil And Invest More In Renewable Energy isn't as snappy a name.
(, Fri 16 Jun 2023, 11:02, Reply)
Reduce Oil Reliance?
Seek Alternatives?
Let's be honest, Just Stop Oil is a shit name.
(, Fri 16 Jun 2023, 11:05, Reply)
Not that it matters, though. I don't imagine that the majority of people supporting the JSO movement have really considered the implications. May as well call it 'Just Stop Cars', or 'Just Stop Chimneys'. Would likely be a more accurate representation of their objectives.
(, Fri 16 Jun 2023, 11:22, Reply)
the lack of clarity in "Stop The Boats", though. Funny that.
(, Fri 16 Jun 2023, 11:32, Reply)
Plus, the people trying to stop the boat crossings haven't yet felt the apparent need to glue themselves to the M6 or flounce about on Snooker Tables. I suspect the majority of the complaints are in response to that behaviour, and not the questionable nomenclature of their organisation.

A militant/disruptive approach isn't going to attract people with good faith in the cause. It's simply going to attract people that are excited about being militant and disruptive.
We're living in an era where literally anybody can go online and preach about whatever cause or message they like. The key is attracting the right audience (in this case, people who perhaps don't live as environmentally responsibly as they could).
When these JSO twats show up and cause a scene, what exactly is the message? Who is watching that shit and thinking "Fuck, I better sell my grotesquely oversized 4x4 and purchase something more appropriate?". These kinds of scenes certainly aren't going to spur the government into action - unless the action is limiting powers of protest even further than they have already.
Extol the virtues of cleaner, greener living. Make a case for the change not only being positive for the wider environment, but attractive on an individual level. You're never going to change the world, but if you can win two people over, and they do the same, you've already started a far better change than gluing yourself to the local motorway ever would. People are selfish, and are far more likely to be receptive to how taking action might benefit them in the short-term rather than how it might benefit the planet in the long-term. Who's installing heat pumps and solar panels primarily because it's good for the environment, and who's doing it primarily because it's good for their wallet?
(, Fri 16 Jun 2023, 13:02, Reply)
Everyone already knows green living would be better, but we've missed lots of opportunities due to oil's PR $$$ and leaders who don't give a fuck.
I assume part of their aim is to simply try and make people sense their panic. Can't see it working, but I've a lot of sympathy for them.

You should have some passion for life. That is, all the known life in the entire universe is about to die and you want to do nothing. You want to vilify people who want to do something, anything, to try and prevent it.
Scum, scum, scum. You, and everyone remotely like you, all need to go.
I sincerely hope you die in the next 30 seconds.

You think I'm angry, I'm not. I want you and everyone like you to either die, or fuck off to your own planet which you can mistreat to your heart's content. You mistake that for anger because you are a stupid cunt.
Our planet can't support stupid cunts like you any longer. You need to go now.
JSO are not radical enough. The crisis being what it is, we need direct action against those actively destroying the ecosystem. Scum like you are enablers for the enemies of planet Earth.

is responsible for 4% of global CO2 emissions. That's a lot.
Anyone sincere about reducing global CO2 emissions would not use it. They especially would not use it for frivolous purposes like, for example, a newsletter with a couple of message boards attached which is barely a forum. Anyone who complains on a newsletter with a couple of message boards attached which is barely a forum about global CO2 emissions is, at least partly, a hypocrite.
Not calling out anyone specific, examine your own opinions and actions and judge yourself accordingly.

do you think using the internet uses no energy? The exact percentage is meaningless, the source of the exact percentage is equally meaningless. using the internet to moan about CO2 burden is hypocritical because it adds.to excess CO2 in the atmosphere. The smaller the audience, the worse the hypocrisy.

but your conversational tone is so confrontational that I feel no urge to provide you with anything you could look up yourself. I note you found something from the BBC to back up my claims. Personally, I refuse to engage in conversation that devolves into trollish behaviour like endless citation requests.
The simple fact that you're calling this an argument tells me everything I need to know. I would be genuinely surprised to discover that you had any friends in the real world.
