Schoep, a 19 year-old shepherd mix, is experiencing so much pain from arthritis that he can’t sleep like a normal dog could, he can only sleep when his owner does something unique to ease his pain.

At 19 years
that is so old for a dog, but hey don't you want to be put to sleep when your body gives up?
I do. And so do you.

My body gave up at 19 as well. Putting him down is the most humane thing to do.

Notice how the story is all about the guy. Arrogant bastard.
A bullet costs $.40, give the dog a happy afterlife.

i don't think there was any confusion as to exactly what i meant. based on your comment i must guess that you think this dog should continue to suffer. yay.

Unless...
...the dog gets that laser surgery. No idea if that works, mind you.

Even if he gets the surgery
it's basically trading off one slow and painful death for a different one not too far down the road.
Dogs aren't supposed to outlive humans, that's just the way it is. It doesn't matter what the owner does, their dog is still mortal. The greatest kindness you can do for your companion is to recognise and accept when your time together is at an end. It's the unwritten duty you take on when you decide to give a home to a pet, to spare them their suffering once their days are over.
Prolonging their pain simply to postpone the inevitable is not love, it's pure selfishness.
