We wanted a monkey butler and bought one off eBay. Imagine our surprise when we found it was just an ordinary monkey with rabies. Worse: It had no butler training at all. Tell us about your duff technology purchases.

The popcorn maker.
I like popcorn.
Fresh, hot popcorn. Om nom nom.
I bought a hot air popcorn popper. Probably used it twice. It left more old maids than it popped kernels. The temperature at the popcorn exhaust could strip paint.
Back to the old big pan with lid, which does twice the volume in half the time with only half the unpopped kernel amount.

Microwave popcorn is OK, but I prefer popping it on the cooker.

You must eat a lot of popcorn.
I bought a bag of kernels, popped a batch for the kids, and sealed up the bag. Opening it up again a couple of months later, all I was able to do was burn kernel-shaped, black marks onto the pan (top tip: soaking in vinegar will allow you to scrub these off).

Boxes of microwave popcorn, are so much more convenient for the casual consumer (although, the unprocessed stuff was nicer).

We get through a bag of kernels per month or so. The microwave stuff is OK, well, the salted is. The buttered is acceptable. All other flavours should be banned from sale.

But they're not meant for popcorn
Use it for home-roasting your coffee (with a strong extractor fan) and Bob's your uncle.

(I've never done this myself, but there's lots of information on that new-fangled Internet I've been reading about).

I am very low-tech
I use a large, heavy-bottomed pot with a well-fitting lid. On goes the stove, into the pot goes a glug of olive oil, and when the oil starts smoking I add the corn kernels and close the lid. Near-perfect popcorn every time.
