This is a question IT Support

Our IT support guy has been in the job since 1979, and never misses an opportunity to pick up a mouse and say "Hello computer" into it, Star Trek-style. Tell us your tales from the IT support cupboard, either from within or without.

Heres one for you
Laptop works fine with an external drive to play dvds. Laptop crashes, I reinstall windows, the drivers and all the service updates from microsoft. Now the dvd doesn't work. Says I need a hi-speed hub or port or something. Strange thing is it worked fine before I reinstalled windows. Help!

have you tried turning it off and on again?

Are you certain you've installed all the drivers?
Best way to check seems to be in Device Manager.

Right click on My Computer, and go to Properties. In the window that opens, go to 'Hardware' tab and click on Device Manager. Once in there, click where it says computer, then click on the top right button, looks like a magnifying glass over a computer. That'll scan for hardware changes, and might help. That's XP though, I've not a clue how to do this in Vista.

Thanks
I've tried this already and it doesn't make any difference. Im getting to the bashing it with a hammer stage cuz at least that will make me feel better while im doing it.

You might need chipset drivers for USB 2.0
I recently re-installed Windows XP on my Samsung NC10, from a CD which had Service Pack 3 already integrated. Even that wasn't enough to turn on the high-speed USB. I had to go to Samsung's website, download the chipset drivers, and install them, before high-speed USB would work.

Check your laptop manufacturer's website, just in case.

and this too
if possible, chipset drivers (and any internal hardware drivers) should be the first thing you install after windows

and this...
you'll need the specific chipset drivers for the lappy.

wooo!

did you install
the latest drivers from the dvd makers website?

not having a hi-speed port shouldn't mean it doesn't run, especially if it ran before.

I assume you installed the same version of Windows again?

EDIT - it appears I am a little slow

Try
I ran into this problem as well, most computers don't come with the codec to actually play a DVD. If you're player actually came with a CD of software trying installing that as it may have the information you need, or alternatively try something like VLC.

Windows just works -- quit your whining...
Call the people you bought the machine from and demand they fix it. Or, call Microsoft and ask them to help.

install ubuntu
or any other linux variant and then at least when something like this happens it's fixable

Brilliant solution!
It's fixable in xp too, you self righteous knob.

unlikely to be anything to do with usb 1 or 2....
try downloading the k-lite codec pack

I had a very similar problem a couple of days ago.
Reinstalled XP about a month ago and couldn't get USB2.0 to work at high speed for uploading camera photos / downloading music to my phone. Found this:

www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/page-37818_35_0.html

Or, more specifically, the following info:

To install USB 2.0 controller drivers

Before completing this procedure, determine if the USB 2.0 controller
drivers you have on your computer are installed. To determine this, do the
following:

1.. Open Computer Management.
2.. In the console tree, click Device Manager.

a.. Computer Management
b.. System Tools
c.. Device Manager
3.. On the View menu, click Devices by type.
4.. In the details pane, click the plus sign to the left of Universal
Serial Bus controllers.
If the word "Enhanced" is included in any of the listed controllers, your
computer has USB 2.0 controller drivers installed.

If you cannot find the word "Enhanced" in any of the listed controllers,
perform the following procedure:

1.. Stop using any USB devices (such as a printer or Web cam) except the
mouse and keyboard.
2.. In the details pane, click the plus sign to the left of Other devices.
Then, under Other devices right-click Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller,
and then click Update Driver.
3.. Follow the steps in the Hardware Update Wizard to complete the
procedure. When you are finished, you might be prompted to restart your
computer.
Notes

a.. To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control
Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer
Management.
b.. If Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller is not listed under Other
devices, you cannot install a USB 2.0 driver. To find out more about
installing these drivers, contact the manufacturer of your computer.

It's a bit beginner-y, but it worked for me where all else failed.
