New job
I've got a job starting in 1 month. My PhD is finishing then, the thesis is in final corrections...

And I'm absolutely shitting bricks terrified. Really terrified. This is my first non-temp job and it's a huge step up in responsibility - they said in the interview that it's in at the deep end with minimal supervision.

Is it just me, or is it this normal to be absolutely bone deep scared of the job? No matter how much I reassure myself that it'll be fine, that the worst that could happen is I get fired... I'm still frightened :S

A request
I'm feeling incredibly lazy.

I need to churn out a short story or two and I need some ideas.

Can someone give me a setting, a character or two (just names are fine) and three items which must be included.

I'll write it this afternoon and post the result either later this evening or tomorrow.

Ta.

Home again home again, jiggity jig
Hey Ya'll! As SOME of you know, I was out in Iowa this week, riding with Lance Armstrong to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in memory of my Sister, who died from breast cancer...

474 official miles, my odometer says 512 total miles...and MANY new stories for future QOTW's!

If anyone is interested in sponsoring me on that ride, there IS still time! Fundraising deadline is August 31st! Gaz me and I will forward the link!

Cheers!

The PenguinOfDeath guide to England*
The motorways are horrific, and it's far too hot.

How on earth do you all put up with the heat?

And driving near London made me want to die.

*Or at least the bits he saw.

afternoon
well, I had an exciting and eventful day yesterday.

my ear infection felt decidedly better and my bathroom is coming along.

I then met Ancrenne, Clendrix and Mistaspakkaman and was mildly snogged by Kaol. Tremendously lovely people, who were then full of compliments after my band had finished rocking out.

the gig went excellently as well. loads of people came from all over the place to see us, which was pretty touching!

Evening all
I've had an odd sort of day. Did my first saturday at work and while it wasn't the hell it had been described to me as, it was still busy and it went really quickly. I need to practice using their computer system more as I'm fine using most computer stuff, only put a huffy client in front of me and I go to pieces and forget how to do stuff and look stupid. We may have a practice frog - most places have a practice dog or cat who lives there and we already have a dog. One of the vets has owned a Spanish frog for about two years which was brought into her old practice to be put to sleep humanely as it was found on a lettuce leaf, so she kept it instead and brought it in today as she wants a new home for it. So it'll either go to London zoo or stay with us :)

Then went to my parents and it was all a bit odd, for various reasons, but went good in the end. Then came back to my flat a bit subdued, but cheered up as someone has sent me something very special in the mail, so I'm all happy again now.

Bit longwinded, sorry.

How's your day been?

Book now to avoid dissapointment.
I shall be in London the Friday evening before the August London bash. If anyone from the bash would like to meet up for dinner or a drink then I shall be more than happy to oblige. My hotel is 5 minutes away from The Cardinal pub.

If no-one is forthcoming then don't despair for I'm sure some rich city businessman will spot me from afar and whisk me off for a slap up meal and some kinky business.

Do rich city businessmen like old and slightly overweight northern women?

porn
so whilst i was away recently, i lent my laptop to a male friend. a single male friend.

he has carefully deleted the history of websites, so all my addresses that popped up automatically - thrilling things like halsburys laws of england - have gone. this is really annoying as i never use favourites and now can't find half of them.

but he has clearly also been using it for more personal purposes. if i type an address that begins with a p, it pops up with allsorts from something called "pornhub" - "search for masturbating virgins, first time lesbians etc". wtf??? and no matter how many times i delete my internet history etc, that remains in place.

how do i get rid of it?

and do i tell him???

reminds me of when i was at uni and my flatmate's 15 year old brother came to stay. the bill for all the movies he'd watched on the porno channel was huge..... being naive, he'd watched just enough of each one to trigger the charge, probably thinking he was being v v clever......

Morning all.
(sorry if I'm stepping on any toes)

Well it's been a lovely week and I'm enjoying the sun sitting in my back garden with a jug of Pimm's, yes I know it's early but the sun is over the yard arm somewhere in the Empire, as Father would say.

There is enough Pimm's and non-alcoholic punch for all. Cucumber sandwiches to follow.

Afternoon tea will be served at 3.

Bring your laptops as the wi-fi is strong.

Who cares to pull up a wicker chair?

bearing my soul
so 90's I know, but if ever there was a community I thought could sympathise with me, it's b3ta.

Do you ever come home drunk and see the leaves on trees and think they look so sharp in detail, so sharp, and you've never noticed them before, not like that?

Everything seems sharper, all physical things, all metaphysical things.

Life. Why are we here? Doing the fucking same shit, no adventures. I feel like I was born in the wrong century. Sure I'm bad sighted and suffer from hay fever but I wish was born in the Wild West, or the Napoleonic period. I wish I could achieve something, wish I stood for something important.

Life is so boring. Aye it's fine saying do this, go rock climbing, but it's not living is it? Do we need war to live? Look at history - we've always fought, ARE always fighting. Do we need confrontation? Do I need confrontation?

Fuck knows. All I know if I feel like I couldn't care less if I died this day, week or month far too often.

Sorry, this is the most confessional I've ever got online or in RL, wouldn't/won't even share this with my great g/f.

I'm 23, I need something to live for.

I'll delete this in the morning/afternoon/when I wake, it just feels good to type it out, get it out of my system.

Thanks.

Following Che's post below
During the time I worked in a JobCentre, and back in the days where jobs were placed on bits of card and then stuck up on the display boards, we had had a confectionary company place a vacancy with us:

Wanted: Fudge Packers. Experience preferred, but full training will be given.

Nobody spotted this for days...

100% genuine

Saw a job ad in the local paper this morning, and I quote:

"Tug masters and general purpose hands...primarily in the Humber, the role may include work in other ports"

Any takers?

Smart/Casual
Why isn't there a word for smart/casual? There's even a word for the bit of worn grass under a seesaw, although I forget what it is so surely smart/casual should have its own word. This is starting to bother me.
