OK, so, since I'm a walking pile of bad luck at the moment
what silly superstitions do you have to ensure good luck? Crossing fingers all day is not practical

alt q: did anyone do anything practical with their weekend?
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 17:18, 142 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
oh, great
and unlucky enough to have to sympathy reply myself

*mopes*

*THERE THERE*

OK, I feel a bit better now

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:08, Reply)
I cross my fingers when I see a single magpie
and that's about it.

I certainly did not: I sat in the park and read books. I now have one sunburnt knee.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 17:51, Reply)

sun carpet
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 17:57, Reply)
It would be difficult to carpet burn one's knee
sitting in a park alone. I don't think I've ever got carpet burn - clearly I'm far too vanilla.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 17:59, Reply)
or have laminate wood floors

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:03, Reply)
Well, or that, but it's all carpets in this flat
and my sofa is too nicely made to chafe when you shag on it.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:04, Reply)
shag-pile carpet?

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:07, Reply)
Fnar.
No, this flat is cheap and the carpets aren't very nice; I suspect it would chafe significantly.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:10, Reply)
Sounds painful.

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:20, Reply)
Perhaps I'm just boring or just not spontaneous enough
but it seems a bit silly to shag on the carpet when it's not possible to be in my flat and more than about 6m away from my bed...
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:25, Reply)
Superstition is rubbish,
I don't salute magpies or any of that bollocks.

I went out in the sun a lot yesterday and this morning, now doing some boring paperwork and about to hoover. *sigh*

Edit: Currently laughing at fake profiles on OKC.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 17:51, Reply)
I know it's rubbish, but I'd like superstitions to work
because then I'd have more control on the world.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:02, Reply)
Soon as you learn that control is over-rated
then you can just enjoy the ride! :D
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 18:21, Reply)
but I hate it when I do everything I possibly can
then something outside of my control ruins it. Although I suppose I'm not the kind of person who should be given control of things, I'd piss about with it

A bit on the small side for me though.

I am suprised they chased ducks tho - I would have expected them to be off tyrying to find rabbit holes
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 19:22, Reply)
Rabbits, squirrels, moles, ducks, cats, they'll chase or hunt anything.

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 19:34, Reply)
you can't chase a mole
those fellows are either slow or underground
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 19:43, Reply)

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:53, Reply)
Really.

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 22:01, Reply)
I seem to generally lead a charmed life
and even though some things go spectacularly wrong, and I'm an absolute wonder at putting my foot in it and cocking up, I always seem to get what I need. Not to sound too Noel Edmonds, but Cosmic Ordering seems to work for me. Or something similar, anyway.

I desperately hate magpies, though. There's a lot of them round here, and the bastards are always alone. If I see a lone magpie, it bothers me for the rest of the day.

Alt: yes. We cleared up the front garden, cutting down/back a bunch of trees and bushes taht were blocking the door and the kitchen window. Then I cleaned the door and windows, and swept up the drive. It looks fab now.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 19:48, Reply)
Can't you count them as being together if you see them on the same day
or do they have to be in your eyeline at the same time?
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 19:56, Reply)
my rule is you have to be able to see them both from the same spot
you can't just toddle off having seen one and put all that bad luck on hold while you go looking for another one.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:00, Reply)
This ^
there's about a 10 second window in which to count them together, otherwise you have to count them as two single ones.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:06, Reply)
and how long does this bad luck/good luck phase
last for after spotting them?
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:08, Reply)
It's just that day.
otherwise you'd be storing it all up for ages!
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:09, Reply)
oh, right. Thought maybe I was working
through a backlog
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:10, Reply)
until the end of the day
or the next observed pair/single magpie, whichever comes first.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:09, Reply)
if you say
Good day mr magpie. How are you, mrs maghpie and all the little magpies?

All the bad luck goes away
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:20, Reply)
Being superstitious is like
reading tabloids, going to church, putting ketchup on pasta or voting in TV talent shows: a sure fire sign of a complete lack of intelligence.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 20:56, Reply)
thanks for that Dawkins.

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:08, Reply)
Dawkins eh?
I must have gotten the level of condescending just right.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:13, Reply)
Can you add food snobbery and arguing about how to pronounce "scone" to that list?

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:18, Reply)
I did half.

(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:24, Reply)
Putting ketchup on anything that isn't a chip
a burger, sausage or similar. Putting ketchup on pasta sounds especially wrong, though.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:28, Reply)
ketchup is the devil's pus
just thought I'd put a few people off their dinner
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:42, Reply)
Agreed.
Where chips are concerned, it's curry sauce or nowt.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:44, Reply)
It is indeed the devils manky period clots
it's just about palatable on hotdogs and burgers and that's it. Mayonnaise is far superior for chips.
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:48, Reply)
bearable with NOTHING
and there is nothing more horrific than watching people put ketchup on steak
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:53, Reply)
Heathens!
I've never seen anyone do that, and I'm glad - I might have had to kill them.

I can paint nails on a train me.
I painted em glittery green in the back of my folks' car on the day I went to university. You can always lick them smooth if you make a small mistake.

I can't get the hang of painting nails smoothly
they always end up a bit bumpy and uneven. What's the secret?
(, Sun 10 Apr 2011, 21:55, Reply)
I have found that if you don't put too much varnish on the brush
and only brush your nails once, it goes on more evenly than if you try and fill in all the gaps whilst the varnish is still wet. Erm. If that makes sense. You can stick another coat over the top to fill in the gaps once the first one is dry.

She did all the massage and the hand moisturising, but as my nails were lovely and long and painted silver at the time, she appreciated that she only had boring colours and there was no point ruining a good job.
