This may be the case.
However I like her character, so it's OK by me, one of the few assistants I've not hated.

I actually preferred Billy Piper believe it or not.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:25, Reply)
I disliked her far less than I expected to, in fact she was quite good.
I think I prefer Amy though.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:26, Reply)
I don't like Amy. I can't put my finger on why but I do.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:28, Reply)
Rampant gingerism.
that's what it is. Plus you want Matt Smith to your self.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:28, Reply)
Nah! he's too skinny for me.
I'd rather have Tom Baker.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:30, Reply)
i wouldn't turn him down
but I'd be thinking of david Tennant the whole time
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:31, Reply)
I prefered Dadid tennant
who is, if anything skinnier.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:31, Reply)
Speaking of gingerism

Oh dear!
We can't let the redheads die out.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:34, Reply)
i may ahve said this before many times
but I always wanted to be ginger
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:36, Reply)
Why?

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:37, Reply)
it looks cool
and my best mate when I was about 5 had bright orange-ginger hair, so of course i was jealous
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:38, Reply)
Amy & Rory are both great
and even david Walliams couldn't ruin today's episode for me.

And,by the way, I didn't really think that other bloke was a nonce. I actually doubt there are any genuine nonces on B3ta, at least among the ones that have posted nonce like stories. I suspect that people that way inclined wouldn't be dumb enough to write about it.

I did think that bloke was a fucking idiot, mind, but also I may have been a bit grumpy this afternoon I think. I probably should have ignored him, rather than give him shit though.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:36, Reply)
i think I'm in a minority for actually liking Donna
but I never watched whatserface's comedy series, which seems to be a reason lots of people disliked her character. I just liked how she was properly a strong character without being all cool as sassy
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:25, Reply)
SHe wasn't bad at all
and I connot stand Catherine Tate, but she was alright. Not disliked and of the assistants in the news stuff, well Rory is a bit wet.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:28, Reply)
there is a bad habit of the current run to make
male characters a bit pathetic. Done once or twice, fine, but it always seem to happen that they are (at least at first) a bit crap
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:30, Reply)
Except Captain Jack.
Good point though, it's not just Dr Who, it's society as a whole, not sure why but men being portrayed as strong, competent or anything other than a bit weak and helpless is getting increasingly uncommon.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:33, Reply)
I don't think that's exactly true
we're just moving away a bit from the idea that all men should be strong and rescue weak women.

edit: I accept I am the lone voice of my kind of feminism here though :P
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:35, Reply)
Maybe not exclusively true, but there's a strain of it.
Probably a reaction, I agree. I prefer strong characters, be they male or female, but i'd rather the one wasn't at the expense of the other.

fuck it if I carry this on I'll probably come across as a sexist and I'm really not.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:39, Reply)
You always make me do the washing up when I visit : (

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:40, Reply)
ANd the housework.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:43, Reply)
Yeah well
I think if you totted it up, the number of women abused, raped and helpless in films as compared to men will still probably FAR outnumber men. We're just not used to seeing those roles reversed so it sticks in your mind more than the countless examples of strong competent men and weak women.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:41, Reply)
while your point is true
I think the newer tendency to make up for it by making men look crap and women cool helps no one. I want the right to be crap sometimes, too
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:44, Reply)
I'd rather it was that way round myself, than the other.
though the best solution would be to have strong men and women, but try and avoid gender stereotyping, so you don't always have a sweet female doctor masquerading as being of actual use.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:45, Reply)
I think better would be to think of
characters not necessarily as strong or weak, but as rounded. I'm crap at a lot of things, I need to see faults in characters before I can identify.

I think making female characters without flaws (which is something which does keep cropping up, along with the fact they have to be skinny and pretty) makes them more alien and actual demonstrates an idealised male gaze...blah blah blah..boring myself now
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:50, Reply)
Yes, you are of course totally right.
I don't know what I was on about. I'll shut up now.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:44, Reply)
I have a strong feeling you don't agree
but that's okay. Like I said above I have my own specific brand of feminism
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:46, Reply)
call it Post-feminism
there are enough versions of that that one's bound to fit and if it doesn't, just claim everyone else has misunderstood the meaning of post feminism
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:48, Reply)
it's not a winnable argument
and nothing to be gained from rerunning it again. Me apologies.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:49, Reply)
it's a valid discussion
there are no winners in contemporary cultural theory
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:51, Reply)
Better you have it than me then
We pretty much agree, but you articulate better and there's less chance you will be assumed to be biased.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:54, Reply)
oh i absolutely don't
I'm well aware that the points I'm making just aren't clear enough when I'm typing. I either need a month to write it up in or the person right in front of me so I can rant until they get tired and just agree with me
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:58, Reply)
I didn't say you were good, just better than me.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:59, Reply)
The problem is that it's very difficult to let go of feminist rants when there are still so many women suffering at the hands of patriachal socities.
Until they have caught up to the western world, (and we still have a way to go), it's difficult to sit back and relax a little.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:59, Reply)
this is true, has been for a while
i suspect a part of it is a complete misreading of feminism by a shit load of people. Especially since it's so hard to find clumsy women on TV, now - they have to be pretty, sassy and cool to be a character. I feel sidelined.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:36, Reply)
On a related note.
I was listening to a singer the other night she had a jolly little ditty about her boyfriend being in a coma and her preferring it that way. I was finding it mildly amusing until I swapped the genders in my head and realised that if is was a bloke singing about how he liked it that his girl friend was just a lump of meat and he didn't have to put up with her whining it'd be horrific.

I think something like that
and our reactions to it have to be read in the context of all media so far. Still, seems mean on the poor unconscious guy

Finally found it.
just wanted to link it as I think I failed to describe it well.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:38, Reply)
But Rory isn't weak
I think that's the point of his character arc. He seems weak at first but when push comes to shove he will stand up to anyone. The way he confronted The Doctor last week was fantastic.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:38, Reply)
this ^
also, there have been some great moments which show how him and Amy work well as a couple
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:39, Reply)
^ this
he's a character who isn't traditionally strong, but manages to generally do the right thing and stick to his beliefs
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:39, Reply)
You're right.
Maybe it's just that he's someone I'd not get on with, because he is too nice. this is my personality flaw, not his.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:46, Reply)
Catherine Tate is better at acting than writing.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 22:18, Reply)
SO it would seem
