Moron Nonce said he won't post again after the previous thread.
So...

Um, I need a question now, don't I?

Just because i think it is right to move the "Don't make us travel" Travellers on from Dale Farm I got called a NIMBY.

I take offence at that, I am not a NIMBY and I hate them. In fact, I'd hate to have one live near me.

What's the worst thing you've been called?

The kids I went to school with used to call me jellybelly
particularly unkind as I wasn't actually that fat at school; I became much more so after leaving. When my dad found out, he started calling it me as well.

Cuntishness off kids, whilst not being entirely accepted, can be expected and tolerated. Cuntishness of that magnitude from ones parents cannot.

How are you doing Berk ? I've perfected how to cook steaks now, like, absolutly perfect. I had a ribeye last night and I couldn't tell between eating the fat and eating the meat. I don't think I ever thought once while eating it "Hmm, I'm chewing more than I should be".

Do you like steaks?

Well, that's good. I was in Al's Sainsburies today (sainsburys? What's the ploral? Do you ploral it? I donno. Isn't it "Sainsbury's Supermarket" because it belongs to someone, there are no squggly lines on that one).
and I got 3 ribeyes so I could do the same thing as last night and freeze too. They're in the fridge at the moment, and it's up to you, I can put two in the freezer, or one of them. I also have a whole butternut squash and will struggle to eat the whole thing, so it would be a big favour to me if you want some of that too. Otherwise, I'll cook half of it and then look at the other half and think to myself "Oh gonz, it's a saturday, why are you all alone on this night? Why should this night be different from all others?" and get morose.... or I'll roast all of it and I can have half tomo with a bit of pasta.

I'm not bothered, getting clinicly depressed for an evening or having it with a bit of pasta tomorow instead, eaither way is good for me. I think I'd rather not get clinicly depressed, I was last saturday night and it wasn't very nice, I ended up having half an uncelebratory banoffee pie.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 18:54, Reply)
Or if you fancy making it a threesome, I don't have to freeze any of them.

Hmmm.

I think being told I was going through a mid-life crisis insulted me quite a bit.

I used to get called a hippy when I had long hair, or a Goth when I dyed it black, didn't like either of those.

Worst thing I've ever been called was a waste of breath, a waste of time and a waste of skin by some guy who'd only just met me, that was a bit harsh

And,by the way, I didn't really think that other bloke was a nonce. I actually doubt there are any genuine nonces on B3ta, at least among the ones that have posted nonce like stories. I suspect that people that way inclined wouldn't be dumb enough to write about it.

I did think that bloke was a fucking idiot, mind, but also I may have been a bit grumpy this afternoon I think. I probably should have ignored him, rather than give him shit though.

i think I'm in a minority for actually liking Donna

there is a bad habit of the current run to make
male characters a bit pathetic. Done once or twice, fine, but it always seem to happen that they are (at least at first) a bit crap
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:30, Reply)
Except Captain Jack.
Good point though, it's not just Dr Who, it's society as a whole, not sure why but men being portrayed as strong, competent or anything other than a bit weak and helpless is getting increasingly uncommon.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:33, Reply)
I don't think that's exactly true
we're just moving away a bit from the idea that all men should be strong and rescue weak women.

edit: I accept I am the lone voice of my kind of feminism here though :P
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:35, Reply)
Maybe not exclusively true, but there's a strain of it.
Probably a reaction, I agree. I prefer strong characters, be they male or female, but i'd rather the one wasn't at the expense of the other.

fuck it if I carry this on I'll probably come across as a sexist and I'm really not.

(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:43, Reply)
Yeah well
I think if you totted it up, the number of women abused, raped and helpless in films as compared to men will still probably FAR outnumber men. We're just not used to seeing those roles reversed so it sticks in your mind more than the countless examples of strong competent men and weak women.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:41, Reply)
while your point is true
I think the newer tendency to make up for it by making men look crap and women cool helps no one. I want the right to be crap sometimes, too
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:44, Reply)
I'd rather it was that way round myself, than the other.
though the best solution would be to have strong men and women, but try and avoid gender stereotyping, so you don't always have a sweet female doctor masquerading as being of actual use.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:45, Reply)
I think better would be to think of
characters not necessarily as strong or weak, but as rounded. I'm crap at a lot of things, I need to see faults in characters before I can identify.

I think making female characters without flaws (which is something which does keep cropping up, along with the fact they have to be skinny and pretty) makes them more alien and actual demonstrates an idealised male gaze...blah blah blah..boring myself now
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:50, Reply)
Yes, you are of course totally right.
I don't know what I was on about. I'll shut up now.
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:44, Reply)
I have a strong feeling you don't agree
but that's okay. Like I said above I have my own specific brand of feminism
(, Sat 17 Sep 2011, 21:46, Reply)
call it Post-feminism
there are enough versions of that that one's bound to fit and if it doesn't, just claim everyone else has misunderstood the meaning of post feminism

The problem is that it's very difficult to let go of feminist rants when there are still so many women suffering at the hands of patriachal socities.
Until they have caught up to the western world, (and we still have a way to go), it's difficult to sit back and relax a little.

this is true, has been for a while
i suspect a part of it is a complete misreading of feminism by a shit load of people. Especially since it's so hard to find clumsy women on TV, now - they have to be pretty, sassy and cool to be a character. I feel sidelined.

On a related note.
I was listening to a singer the other night she had a jolly little ditty about her boyfriend being in a coma and her preferring it that way. I was finding it mildly amusing until I swapped the genders in my head and realised that if is was a bloke singing about how he liked it that his girl friend was just a lump of meat and he didn't have to put up with her whining it'd be horrific.

I think something like that
and our reactions to it have to be read in the context of all media so far. Still, seems mean on the poor unconscious guy

But Rory isn't weak
I think that's the point of his character arc. He seems weak at first but when push comes to shove he will stand up to anyone. The way he confronted The Doctor last week was fantastic.

also, there have been some great moments which show how him and Amy work well as a couple

he's a character who isn't traditionally strong, but manages to generally do the right thing and stick to his beliefs

You're right.
Maybe it's just that he's someone I'd not get on with, because he is too nice. this is my personality flaw, not his.
