That looks fucking horseshit.
The video of the "completed" compost looks nothing like completed compost, it's still onion skins and vegetable peelings. Anaerobic digestion works, but doing it on a small scale like that is just daft, you're much better off with a standard compost heap or a wormery.

I don't have a garden, so I was looking for something I can do indoors.

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 14:50, Reply)
It will fucking stink.
have you smelt an anaerobic digester? Also, an anaerobic digester inside is a pretty epic explosion risk.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 14:55, Reply)
NO! IT HAS NO NOSE!!1!!!

I have, but this uses some other type of microorganism from rice or something.
It's meant not to smell bad.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 14:56, Reply)
lactobacillus bacteria
apparently.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 14:56, Reply)
It doesn't matter what bacteria you put in
there will be the usual anearobic bacteria already present, and as soon as you open that airtight container it will stink. And also the lid will burst off because of the gas build up, so you'll need a non airtight container with some kind of water trap on the outlet. And the gas that comes out will stink.

All piss taking aside
it's very good that you're trying to compost stuff, but if you don't have an outside space, does your council not collect green waste or food waste? Because composting on a large scale is much more efficient.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:03, Reply)
Not from flats unfortunatly.
And I don't really want to dump it in a neighbours.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:03, Reply)
Hmmmm, Can you buy a wormery and keep it outside near your communal bins?
Or maybe ask the building management if they would consider letting you do this?
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:05, Reply)
I don't really want to spend any money apart from "a container"
so a wormery isn't what I had in mind. Plus it'll probably get nicked by the gypsies that just parked up nearby.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:11, Reply)
Also:
If you have no garden, what will you do with the compost?
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:14, Reply)
This is the most important point.
Well done CQ, even though you'll soon be a worthless sponger on £26,000 a year, you can still make a good point.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:15, Reply)
If I didn't have to go to work I reckon I could manage on 26k
oh well, back to trying not to look too expendable.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:17, Reply)
That's what I was wondering
but wasn't sure if I was being thick, so didn't ask.

Awww, you don't have to be scared of appearing thick Scarpe.
What's important is that you demonstrate you're trying. Well done.

Chompy's flat is one of those cannabis farms you read about

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:22, Reply)
FUCKS SAKE YOUR ALL AT IT

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:22, Reply)
How many?
Because if you're not actually hosting a triffid farm, then you really don't need the amount of compost you will end up generating from a reasonable amount of food scrap.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:22, Reply)
Betweem my housemate and I
9, but if I make too much compost I can just chuck it away, not like I paid for it.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:23, Reply)
you paid for it to be food

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:25, Reply)
Just buy a bag of compost, it will cost your less than a fiver
and will keep you going for at least 2 years.

You don't need to repot plants on a regular basis anyway.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:26, Reply)
I could sell you some tablets with that in
This, er... won't actually help.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:03, Reply)
doesn't matter
it'll still make methane, and more importantly, if you put protein in there, it'll make ammonia. and that will most definitely ming.

and lactobacillus?, you've often noticed how really, really rancid off milk and cheese definitely, absolutely, doesn't smell at all, haven't you?
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:11, Reply)
Oh here come Dr Science with all his "science"
and "facts" and "knowledge"
I'll have you know we only deal in opinion and rumour round here.

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:14, Reply)
THATS THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT!

(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:14, Reply)
Sorry tangles
Won't happen again.

Fucking lactobacillus? that was what killed PRINCESS DIANA OF HEARTS you fucking MONSTER, chompy. HOW COULD YOU?
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:22, Reply)
I thought it made lactic acid rather than methane
and that acid slowed the methane producing organisms.
(, Tue 31 Jan 2012, 15:22, Reply)
It's multiple metabolic streams
some bugs upregulate some and downregulate others more. Methane isn't really a smell problem anyway to be fair, that's ammonia.
