What do you suggest for the Paralympics?
Tasteless suggestions please. I suggested dwarf throwing, semi -seriously, you'd have thought I'd shit in a font the looks i got.
Alt, still on a sporting theme, did you enjoy games/gym/sport at school? Politicos are whining on about it suddenly being important again, because we've won some medals. Agree or disagree?

I tried to do the rope climbing thing,
i fell off and broke my coccyx. Never really did much sport at school, other than Rugby, i was good at rugby, played for the county.
Children need some sort of motivation to get in to sport, i can't see a better way of doing that than the great coverage of athletes as super-stars that the BBC has been supplying us.

I'm just worried that the hysteria surrounding the olympics will create unrealistic expectations of sporting achievement and/or distract youngsters from academic achievement.

Indeed
But those predisposed towards car smashing will do it anyway, sports or not. They've got dozens of other sports they could focus on (that are covered on tv all year round) and it hasn't worked so far.

The Olympics is great
People getting together in a series of non-violent internation competitions, and the world's greatest atheletes get to show off their stuff on the greatest stage of them all.
But it's just games innit.

i think there will inevitably be people who lose out from having unattainable dreams,
but even if a small percentage go on to be fitter, and more succesful, then it's a good thing. I reckon the positives outweigh the negatives.

Totally agree
I don't think there are any negatives really...But there are parents out there that will say 'fuck it, why should my kid focus on their studies when they can run around after a football instead?'
There are plenty of these sort of people out there. Then the country will be saturated by sports obsessed youngsters that can barely read.
MARK MY WORDS WINDY! MARK THEM!

Contrast the attitude of our highly paid footballers
storming off cos he missed a penalty.
Some athletes missed gold by much smaller margins, they didn't publicly display such petulance.

Yep, I can't tar everyone with the same brush
But use sport as something to fall back on, surely? Get an education, then pursue sports when you can afford to live off of it.

The coalition is 100% focused on the deficit.
There is absolutly no way they'll spend millions of pounds on sport purely to cash in on the good mood the olympics has caused. No way!

Lets be honest. Sport is not going to save our economy.
Gold medals, or prize money isn't going to take us out of recesion.
It would be short sighted, popularist and specious to even consider changing policy because of a once in four years event.
This is why our Government won't do it.

These are precisely my feelings on the whole thing. People are caught up in all the drama. Sports will not save the world.

Alt: It varied, I've never been much of a fan of badminton, basketball, etc. However, I enjoyed it when we used to play football.

It's a very interesting story
It involves MASSIVE DRUGS, stealing, vigilantism, a lack of forgiveness (although not from the wronged party) and a flounce.
It's just waiting for the right qotw.

When there is drink involved,
sometimes you gotta just apologise, take the abuse, and move on. It is a king maker and a ruiner.

don't know about cider. Reckon I'll start with apple chutney or something. I'll give them a couple more weeks for a few more to ripen. After that, mind there's the green apple tree which seems to be planning to ripen much later
