So Labour is saying they will give councils more powers
to stop certain types of shops setting up on the highstreet. Shops like Bookies/Cash converters and payday lenders.

I always think you can judge an area by how many pawn shops there are.

Do you think it's a good idea or do you think it's just treating a symptom rather than the underlying problem.

I know what I think, now's your chance to tell me what you think yeahhh?

there's wild assertions being made here about the use classes order that I just won't stand for

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:58, Reply)
It's seems like a good idea in theory
But the reality is that many councillors are fucking arses who are easily bought with a couple of free lunches.
cf. every single fucking decision made in Coventry city centre since the Luftwaffe decided to change things around a bit.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:56, Reply)
I think, if people didn't need payday lenders they'd piss off quick sharp.

ITS A CITY ACTUALLY

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:58, Reply)
whatever

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:59, Reply)
the reality is that on the kind of high street we're talking about, the landlords need the rent
otherwise they default on loans and we end up paying for it.

or the pension funds don't make money and we end up paying for it.

or the high street dies a little more at a time and we end up with shitty dead end high streets. so we end up paying for it.

if you have a mortgage and you get told that the only tenant you've had a sniff of in 6 months can't go in there because the use is deemed undesirable, you're fucked. only a politician could have come up with something so stupid.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:04, Reply)
It just seems a complete waste of time to revamp a shopping area and then for it to be filled with pound shops and bookies.
That isn't going to improve the local economy.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:06, Reply)
nobody with a brain would spend any money revamping a shopping area
unless/until they had at least the anchor tenants on the hook. no tenants, no shops, it really is that simple.

and unless/until people stop sucking their own cocks for saving a fiver online and start to use the high streets for a fair proportion of their shopping, it's only going to get worse.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:14, Reply)
I was shocked recently at just how much a shop costs to rent.
Refitting also costs a fortune. I partially agree with Swipey, it's only going to get worse unless people start using the high st again OR rents/business rates are lowered.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:23, Reply)
councils can't afford to cut business rates, they don't have enough cash either
and landlords with mortgages or pension performance or fund management targets can't really afford to cut rates - some can, some can't.

it's use it or lose it when it comes to high streets. my own view is, we'll end up with the more desirable areas full of nothing more than beauty salons and restaurants, and the less desirable areas will be pretty much derelict.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:27, Reply)
Sadly I think you're right.
While the centre of my fair city is dying on its knees, out-of-town retail parks are still being built.

I refer you to the proposition of culling those with an IQ under 125
I made a few days ago.

I stand by this.

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:58, Reply)
Aren't IQ scores standardised across the population?

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:58, Reply)
Correct
Killing everyone with a current IQ of 124 or less would bring down the IQ of those with an IQ of 125 or greater
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 11:59, Reply)
The fact Stunned didn't think of this makes me think he'll be one of the first to go.

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:01, Reply)
It doesn't have to be an ongoing assessment. Once every 7 years should do it.

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:03, Reply)
You're right Chompy, He'll be one of the first

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:04, Reply)
If you kill the bottom 75% of the population every 7 years how many years would it take to have less than 1% of the original population?

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:08, Reply)
That is partly dependant on the rate of reproduction of the remaining populace
would you take into account the fact that thick people breed like rabbits because they don't understand where babies come from?
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:10, Reply)
I reckon it would still do by the third cull though.

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:11, Reply)
You would need at least 4 to get below 1% even if there were no breeding at all.
100*0.25=25
25*0.25=6.25
6.25*0.25=1.5
1.5*0.25=0.4

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:15, Reply)
Did you allow for inflation?

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:16, Reply)
No, I already said that.
Taking breeding into account would be really hard since you would need to know how IQ is distributed through populations as you might end up culling a lot of your breeding stock in the first wave which could leave you unable to recover your population.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:20, Reply)
Only joking!

(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:21, Reply)
I don't think any normal person let alone smart person would want to bring a child into a world where they have a astonishingly high chance of being culled.

Of course it's treating the symptom and not the cause.
What else do you expect a political party to suggest?
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:07, Reply)
How much would treating the cause cost?
I suggest more than the "haves" are prepared to pay.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:10, Reply)
Any amount is more than the "haves" are prepared to pay
the question is whether any party is willing to face down the threats that "we'll all leave the country" if you actually make people and companies pay the tax they ought to.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:15, Reply)
Most idividuals (employed people) pay their taxes. High net worth not so much. Corporations less so again.
I wouldn't want to pay a lot more to rescue people from their situations if others above me weren't doing their bit. It's a vicious circle.

Most of the population doesn't seem too appalled by people getting a shittier deal in life than themselves.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:20, Reply)
You don't need to pay a lot more, that's the whole point
you really don't contribute as much as you think you do, it's the Starbucks, Amazons and investment banks that provide the bulk of the money.
(, Mon 8 Apr 2013, 12:25, Reply)
I just hoped the Labour party after so long keeping quiet about all it's "ideas"
would actually have some which weren't totally shit.

Something like one in ten shops in the UK lies empty - we'd all prefer an organic butchers or some shit but if amusement arcades, bookies and loan shops can pay the rent then good luck to them. It's like those spastic darkies in the US 'hey man, the government makes sure there's a liquor store and a gun shop on every block in the ghetto to keep the black man down'. No they don't you fucking retards - they're all owned by Koreans and they're there because they do a booming trade. Sure theres a WHSmiths, and a couple of shit chain clothes stores like Dorothy Perkins but overall its just shit shops. If the council had the power to stop them they still probably wouldn't because we would just have a shit load of empty shops. The high street is pretty much dead anyway.
