Are you aware of this US online sales tax business?
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22426764

Sorry (not very sorry, perhaps) to post a news link but this is interesting to me as an online retailer. Do you think a similar scheme here would save the ailing high street? Should the ailing high street be saved? Is this really just a tax-raising exercise dressed up as helping shops onto a 'level playing field'?

My attitude is fuck the high street - people want (and need, speaking personally) cheaper goods and if online merchants can provide this then good luck to them and don't penalise them - or, indeed, the long-suffering consumer.

Alt: I still can't believe Sportscow is Asian. I feel terribly let down.

It's not really tax raising more like closing a loophole.

(, Fri 10 May 2013, 9:55, Reply)
Kind of, kind of not:
'Currently, only firms with a physical presence in a state must charge online sales taxes' - if you sell via a shop you will by necessity have a physical prescence and thus pay all kinds of taxes, which you don't need if you're only delivering there.
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 9:59, Reply)
That's because the tax system wasn't designed for retail 2.0
the american sales tax is a bit fucked, they should have a national sales tax like VAT to simplify things.

In terms of the high street going under:
Good thing, online retailers are more efficient and therefore consumers often get better value for money which is good for the economy.
Bad thing: They hire a lot less low skill staff and reduce the amount of impulse buying which increases unemployment and can lower the amount the retail sector on the whole takes in.
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:12, Reply)
Really?
No one attacked the phrase retail 2.0? I thought that was a sure thing.

I'd have thought with the online discounts you offer
People wouldn't mind paying a bit of extra tax.

Simple solution
Put the internet ON the high street. I'm surprised no one's thought of this before, to be honest.
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 9:56, Reply)
By jove!!
Then you wouldn't have to wait in for deliveries - you could just walk in and get your goods!

You are no doubt unaware of this, Twoser, but there is a fair amount of 'adult material' on the internet.
I'm not sure decent folks want that sort of thing on the high st.
Maybe we could stick that up a back alley or something?
I don't know, you're the ideas man here.
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:09, Reply)
We could implement some sort of beaded curtain system, maybe

(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:11, Reply)
That would work.

(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:12, Reply)
If I was PM, I'd say butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers don't have to pay as much tax as anyone else.

I don't give a shit about saving the High St.

I just wonder whether a rise in online and a drop in high street would have an impact on jobs? Or would a growing online retail sector pick up the slack with customer service operatives and drivers and warehouse staff etc?

it does have a large decrease in jobs, especially low skilled.

(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:25, Reply)
The latter I think.
But even if there would be a drop in employment, that's greater efficiency on the part of the businesses and thus kind of tough shit in a sense.
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:14, Reply)
The problem being that the unemployment will be Structural unemployment
and that's a real cunt to get rid of, there's a balance increasing efficiency is good, but if people have no chance of getting a job then their efficiency is 0. As happened in coal towns in the 80s
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:17, Reply)
yeah but they're pretty pointless people anyway
send them to the newly formed Scotland
(, Fri 10 May 2013, 10:19, Reply)
The trouble with country folk
is that they buy a couple of range rovers off the back of honest hardworking city folk and suddenly think they're too good to "muck oot coos" like their forebears.

Ah yes but if we turfed out a couple of generations of foreigners we'd be fine.
I keep telling you - Farage is your man, here.
