Desparate attempt at a post-5pm thread:
I'm taking my penny farthing along to this in a bit: lcc.org.uk/articles/lcc-organises-second-protest-ride-after-third-cyclist-killed-in-three-weeks-on-street-without-dedicated-space-for-cycling
Leaving aside the knee-jerk hatred for cyclists, do you recon this kind of protest does any good? I have my doubts but what the hell it's local.

Alt: is this place full of placids? it seems to dies at 5 o'clock, actually more like 4:30, does any one actually work?

AltAlt: post your favourite memory of Monty, poor dead Monty.

I'm in the pub.
Everyone should have the right to protest. Unfortunately protests rarely have any impact.

Altalt: he and his girlfriend bought me an excellent book for my birthday. He is a cunt though.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:13, Reply)
I was going to make a charitable donation on your behalf for your birthday
But you never sent me a link and then you broke your foot.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:19, Reply)
Appreciate the gesture though. You can still make a donation to Epilepsy Action though. Maybe a strobe light?

Oddly enough - I'm still here!
That's because I'm working from home.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:14, Reply)
I was mostly finding it funny that you get so much stick for leaving at 5 when most here seem to go home earlier.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:15, Reply)
Unless they rush to get a bit of work done before they leave, having done nothing all day.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:17, Reply)
yeah, this is possible.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:19, Reply)
I only have set hours when I'm in the office..
...which is only once a week. Other than that, I set my own. However, my original comments about being 'expected' to be at unpaid extra-curricular type activities were blown out of proportion (quel surprise) and 'doing a Placid' became a meme - go me!
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:21, Reply)
Memes can get tiresome.

Why are people cycling on streets that aren't suitable for that activity?

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:18, Reply)
Good news. The Bristol bash in August is when micro is in Scotland. So I can make it.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:19, Reply)
I can't speak for anyone else
but in my case because there isn't a dedicated cycle route to my place of work form my flat.

This would be silly, but there's a valid argument that more people cycling in London would be good for pretty much everyone (part form people who make money off cars/petrol) and that providing facilities to make cycling in London safer would encourage this.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:23, Reply)
People cycling is a good thing (I even do myself sometimes). What causes the bad reputation is all the pricks running red lights, bouncing up on to the pavement, riding in the dark with no lights etc.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:27, Reply)
+ refusing to slow down or take their feet off the pedals
even if they are about to fall over.

The lycra-clad variety are cunts to a man, especially in groups.
However so are car drivers who attempt to overtake them on blind corners cos they're too fucking impatient to wait 5 seconds.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:35, Reply)
How much do cyclists pay in road fund tax
Or whatever it's called these days.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:34, Reply)
To be fair, some drivers don't pay any either if their emissions are low enough
therefore it's a fairly pointless argument especially as many cyclists will pay the duty if they also own a car.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:42, Reply)
I've applied for loads these last few days
but realistically it's going to be the end of the month before I hear anything. Meeting some recruitment agency bint on Tuesday in the meantime. Sign on tomorrow - fucking joy. I hope it doesn't take the useless cunts 10 weeks to process my claim like it last time otherwise I'm likely to go postal.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:55, Reply)
I know, I was just being awkward.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:39, Reply)
The road fund tax hasn't paid for the roads for years
Nowadays it's just an attempt to keep the greens happy by taxing 4x4s more.
1.4 million cars are untaxed and uninsured too...

Poverty, desperation and a misguided idea that by doing so they will live longer?

I'm not sure if its the heat, or if I'm the one in the wrong, but i'll see what they have to say about it in Group Theorpy.

As a cyclist, you take a risk on the road same as a motorcycle,
in general, there does seem to be increasing provision for cycle lanes, at least in my area and areas I cycle in.
a mass protest is probably no good, as it will just slow traffic and cause more motorists to get on the frankly ridiculous anti-cycling band wagon, when in truth, if everyone followed the law, and did their best to not be a dick or take unneccesary risks, (cyclists and motorists alike) then there would be less of a problem.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:32, Reply)
Living in Oxford you're much better catered for when it comes to cycling than most places.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:33, Reply)
i appreciate that

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:38, Reply)
Apparently Bristol was made the first cycling city in the UK.

2nd worst Bond after Brosnan.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 17:57, Reply)
Don't fucking start.
It's in the top three films you knob. Live and Let Die, Goldfinger - if you were wondering.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:00, Reply)
Bloody terrible. Best Bonds in order:
Craig.
Connery.
Dalton
Moore.
Lazenby.
Brosnan.

Considering how the character was portrayed in the original books.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:05, Reply)
I am excluding Holness on the radio and Niven's spoof

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:06, Reply)
I also rate Dalton quite highly.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:07, Reply)
Why did they drop him after only two films?

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:10, Reply)
They didn't,
There was a massive rights issue over the ownership of the franchise which lead to a five or six year gap between films; by the time it was resolved he decided himself he didn't want to do another one as his contract had (I think) lapsed.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:12, Reply)
Ah.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:13, Reply)
I have an excellent Bond films reference book.
Only goes up to Die Another Day, though.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:15, Reply)
What's your view on Craig versus Connery?

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:19, Reply)
I prefer Craig I think.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:23, Reply)
I think quite a lot of those who've read the books / understand the genre properly prefer him. More human.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:27, Reply)
QoS was a bit poor though.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:31, Reply)

but seriously they are shit, somtimes you can see they've speeded up a car chase

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:31, Reply)
Yes, but consider when they were made. Nearly 50 years ago.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:32, Reply)
who cares? I wasn't alive and compared to modern movies they look rubbish
When they were made is irrelevant.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:34, Reply)
Nah, the worst Bond chase and special effect
is the crappy CGI glacier melting and parachute surfboarding in Die Another Day.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:34, Reply)
You're right that CGI was very poor.

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:38, Reply)
Went to see it at the cinema, everyone was like "WTF was that shit?"
Thing is Bond stunts should be real, if it goes CGI it's just another action movie.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:47, Reply)
Connery's still alive, it's not too late for them to make the equivalent of The Five Doctors.
In space, with Jaws and Dolly.
(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:32, Reply)
what is this?

(, Tue 16 Jul 2013, 18:25, Reply)

It's the drivers of large vehicles I feel for
Afraid to make any kind of manoeuvre in case some suddenly-visible lycra-clad prick going at 30 tries to swerve through the two foot gap they need to make the turn
