hello all
Currently thinking of going self employed/starting own buisness. Am I insane and/or about to die from stress ? Can I hear from any b3tans who have gone down this route?

alt: its a bit nippy out isn't it?

Depends on the business, really. we need more info before we tear you a new one.

how much industry experience do you have

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:33, Reply)
4 years ish

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:34, Reply)
you'll need a lot more than that if you want to be taken seriously as a consultant
it also helps if you've held a successful managerial role, and/or driven a high-profile project to completion
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:39, Reply)
I'm afraid of that
but I think I can gain one steady client
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:46, Reply)

You'll need more cash to get started than you initially think you will.
You'll work more hours for less money at first.
You'll worry about cash flow.
You won't get to take much time off.

However

You'll have more flexibility of lifestyle.
You won't have (other than any creditors) as many people breathing down your neck all the time.
If you don't want to do something you can pay someone else to do it if it's necessary or you don't have to do it at all if it isn't.
You'll pay a lot less income tax if you have a limited company.

Also

Keep your costs down.
Don't do things yourself you know you'll do badly.

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:14, Reply)
you can write off pretty much anything as a business expense, icluding holidays, hookers and dildos
Alt: my nips are ready to cut glass now you're here
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:02, Reply)
I loved the freedom of not answering to anybody
but my lazy nature (and the fact that I wasn't the one paying the bills) meant I didn't push myself to make a comparable wage to the one I left.
The only thing I would advise is to make sure you get a good accountant - one you can trust.

Alt: fucking freezing. Took the dog out for a wander earlier and I'm still not warm.
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:06, Reply)
I would also advise that selling old copies of bunty ent a good business

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:08, Reply)
it looks like very hard work
but very motivating. that is all I have to say.

alt: yes. this year I chose a winter coat that isn't waterproof. not the cleverest thing I've ever done.
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:06, Reply)
are you also self employed?

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:17, Reply)

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:21, Reply)

i am a lawyer in a city firm
but sadly I do not own said firm :(
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:33, Reply)
aren't there restrictions on law firm ownership?
thats why they have partners instead of directors?
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:39, Reply)
Its a tax dodge thing
it also limits the individual liability of the partners (LLP) should the company either go under or be sued.
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:42, Reply)
I have nothing to contribute to the business question as I am a contracted wage-slave.
I thought it was pretty warm this morning. I was outside replacing my car's doorhandles. That's the sort of thing I do of a morning.
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:06, Reply)
thats because you bought a beat up wreck of an old banger

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:09, Reply)
I was driving past a college today and all the kids were going in for class.
I realised that my car was 7 years old before some of those kids were born and that made me feel old. Then I remembered that I'm 10 years older than my car.

:(
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:11, Reply)

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:44, Reply)
I didn't like it at all.
But my job prespects are pretty gosh darn good, I was looking around yesterday and I could easily jump another 25-50%+ on what I'm earning now, and i'm already on a wage i'm happy with.

I don't have to worry about doing my recipits or getting clients or getting paid. And clients at my level don't go for one-man-bands either. So, someone's making a sheadload out of what I do, good on them.

Some ex collegues in an old place are starting up a firm and I might join them though.
(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:32, Reply)
good luck to you then

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:40, Reply)
Cheers, what I meant by that though was that going on your own is really really not what its cracked up to be and going from that to employeed was the best thing I did.

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:42, Reply)
well I thought I might give it a try anyway

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 16:43, Reply)
everybody happy then?

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 17:27, Reply)
Always!

(, Tue 26 Nov 2013, 17:42, Reply)
i ran a business for a while
tip 1: make sure you're not ahead of what your customers can handle/it isn't the start of an economic downturn
tip 2: get as much business advice as you can from various organisations, you can get loads of grants and loans that way. I think I made more money from loans
