Morning all.
I’m in a really good mood today, mainly thanks to listening to good music on the way into work. So with that in mind my question is this… Do you find that you listen to a particular song/band/artist when you need to be cheered up?
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:48, 71 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Depends on the mood I've got to correct
Weary: Tom Waits, Louisiana Red
Lonely: Hooverphonic
Sad: The Beach Boys
Uncertain of self: Deep Purple
Angry / pissed off / filled with vitriolic rage: The Who

So...The Who, 9 times out of 10.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:52, Reply)
Haha
Bit of a mix there. I tend to only listen to The Beach Boys on a really sunny day... so it doesn't happen that often. :(
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:53, Reply)
Proably a special case, that one
They have a beautiful song called 'Til I Die which I decided I needed to hear after I heard my grandmother had died - it seemed like the only appropriate song for my mood at the time.

Sorry, that's put a bit of a damper on things, hasn't it? Perhaps it's time to wheel out a joke:
The Beach Boys walk into a bar.
"Round?"
"Round?"
"Get a round"
"I get a round?", etc.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:57, Reply)
I think I have heard it, it is indeed a beautiful song!
'I'm a rock in a landslide, rolling over the mountainside' - that the one?

Hahaha good joke! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:00, Reply)
That put me in mind of the Red House Painters' cover of 'I Am A Rock' by Simon & Garfunkel
I think their version fits the lyrics better.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:07, Reply)
Ah Simon & Garfunkel
I love The Blues Run The Game, the cover by Counting Crows is rather good too! :)
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:09, Reply)
Oh gorgeous!
God I'll be ona right downer in a minute. I love the sad songs though. They're full of the skillz.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:13, Reply)
I'm winding up my friends via email,
I should probably stop.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:53, Reply)
What have they done
to deserve this?
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:54, Reply)
He's designs power stations
I was calling him a glorified plumber,
I said
"Should it be water proof? YES
How strong should it be? STRONG
Where should we put them? IN DEH WALLZ"

his response was:
"You just said I don't do pipes!
And cooling water pipes are cool, you can walk through them they're so big.
The other ones are easy to do though your right.... Oooo, design me a system that runs with hot gasses to create tube metal temperatures of 1000°C... oh how much does the material expand? Whats that you'll have to change the Chrome-molly balance in order for it to maintain structural stab..... Fuck you!"
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:02, Reply)
Hehe
He does sound pretty annoyed, I think: Mission Accomplished.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:06, Reply)
that's what he gets for not coming to the pub quiz last night.

(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:08, Reply)
Crumbs
Did you really need him there? What is his specialist subject?
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:12, Reply)
He's one of those sports fans that memorises pointless stats.

(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:15, Reply)
Damn
So he did sort of need to be there.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:16, Reply)
I think you should try and wind me up via gaz.
I bet you can't.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:54, Reply)
I only pick on easy targets.

(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:03, Reply)
Not really
It just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

That said, when I'm cooking I do seem to listen to The Cramps a fair bit. No idea why!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 10:55, Reply)
Haha
I tend to listen to System of a Down when I'm cooking, that's probably more concerning... but it does explain my crazed behaviour.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:13, Reply)
.
Any album in particular?

As I think cooking anything while listening to 'Prison Song' can't be healthy!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:15, Reply)
Hahaha
Well its usually either Toxicity or Mezmerize... I'm quite partial to 'This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song'! :D

I do tend to put on dodgy comp CDs full of weird crap too, I've recently got into Porcupine Tree, they're quite fun.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:20, Reply)
2 cracking albums there
First album is probably the best though!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:21, Reply)
Yeah
Steal This Album is pretty good too!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:25, Reply)
Nah
Only a couple of good songs on there I think.

Worst album is Hypnotise though!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:44, Reply)
I agree
I didn't even buy it, that's how disappointed I was! :(
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:45, Reply)
I bought it because I had to
Toxicity was the first real album I ever bought!

Everyone else downloaded the leak of Mesmerize, I waited until it was in the shops, and wasn't disappointed in the slightest! 1 song is average (Sad Statue), 1 song isn't very good (Lost in Hollywood), but the rest are absolutely fantastic.

Also, the lead in from Soldier Side to B.Y.O.B. is genius!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:49, Reply)
Always
I would be sad and broken if I didn't have music:

Calming down/monging out: Air, Mogwai, Morcheeba and Zero7
Angry: Rammstein, NIN, System of a Down
Need cheering up: 80s/90s cheese, ridiculous pop and things that make me dance. I have a 'tunes that make me happy' playlist and just whack that on in times of need (Queen, ELO, Mika, The Strokes, Feeder...etc)
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:00, Reply)
Ahhh
Queen is perfect for cheering up music! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:01, Reply)
.
One friend person I know hates Queen. With a passion.

To the point where we were in a lock in, and Bohemian Rhapsody came on the jukebox, and he wanted to go outside. Obviously they can't let him back in again, so he ruined his night because he thinks they're shit.

What a tosser.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:14, Reply)
That's
a slightly extreme reaction... he sounds like a bit of a nutter!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:21, Reply)
Hmm
Nutter Tosser.

Spikeypickle can back me up on the fact he's a bit weird!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:23, Reply)
Yers
There's no better cure for having a face like a bulldog chewing a pisscovered nettle than turning 'Killer Queen' up to 11. Or playing air piano to Bohemian Rhapsody. Or moshing to Don't Stop Me Now.
and so on, etc, ad infinitum...
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:15, Reply)
No
Don't Stop me Now is the aural eqivalent of getting perved by a PE teacher. It's hell.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:18, Reply)
I like
Radio Gaga! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:22, Reply)
Ah that's good.
It's a goosebumps song.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:27, Reply)
Damn straight
I made the DJ play it at the wedding and everyone appeared to jump around! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:32, Reply)
Wasn't that when they played Jump Around?

(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:38, Reply)
Awwww
Nooooooo he didn't have it! He also didn't have The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats, can you believe it! Its a classic!! Mwahahaha
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:40, Reply)
And if they don't dance, well they're no friends of mine!
Did you have a 'first dance' song?
If I were ever to get married I'd have Willy Nelson doing Bring Me Sunshine.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:43, Reply)
Exactamundo! Its a great song!!
We did have a first dance song, it was Fall at Your Feet by Crowded House. Our actual song is Everlong by The Foos, its not a very easy song to slow dance to and after months of getting stressed about the right song we eventually decided on Crowded House as we both like them. Its amazing how many songs you think are perfect until you listen to the lyrics and they're about death or breakups! :(
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:49, Reply)
Two examples
Of songs that sounds happier than they really are.

Beer - Reel Big Fish
You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:50, Reply)
Mickey by Toni Basil
Poor slag...
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:58, Reply)
Both Everlong and Fall at Your Feet are on my playlist of
"I'm bessotted" songs.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:50, Reply)
Hehe
They are super! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:52, Reply)
Ah, well that depends.
Sometimes you need to wallow and come out of the other side feeling exorcised. Sometimes you need to be snapped out of it with cheer.

For wallowing I'd go for Patsy Cline (in fact anything country) Chris Isaak, Ann Peebles, Del Amitri, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis, George Michael, and even Dashboard Bloody Confessional.

For cheering me up... most things. Music mostly makes me happy and gives me a strut.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:03, Reply)
Dashboard Confessional??
EMOOOOOOOOOOOO! Hahaha

Do you also cut yourself and write poetry in your own blood oh nemesis of mine??

I love a bit of Fleetwood Mac too
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:08, Reply)
Dashboard
They've done one half decent song. (Hands Down)

The rest are wank.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:13, Reply)
Look when you're down, you take whatever heroin substitute the doc will give you!
I like stuff faaaaaar worse than Dashboard Confessional (and yes, it's wank but so are Steps.)
I don't need to cut myself. I just walk the streets with my earphones in wearing a pained expression.
EDIT: I can't do small writing. 'Gypsy' or 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac. *sobs*
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:15, Reply)
I'll ignore that comment
As Steps are superior to all modern "pop" *spits*

That is all.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:22, Reply)
I love Steps, but they are shit
I went to see them, and have two live VIDEOS.
EDIT: Deeper Shade of Blue makes me cry.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:24, Reply)
That's ok then
I can agree with you there.

They're like Busted in that respect!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:44, Reply)
Sleeping with the Lights On
Classic pop. Total genius.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:00, Reply)
Hehehe
Fair enough. I can't really comment, I listen to some emo shit too, practically everyone on Vagrant Records and they're all emos!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:24, Reply)
Yes
But the song varies from time to time.

I've got a playlist at home I listen to, it has music for every mood, that's fine. Every once in a while I think of a new song to torrent download legally, and then that song is the one to cheer me up for the next few weeks.

The last song for that was Fascination by Alphabeat, and the new one is 99 Problems by Jay-Z. The next one could be anything, from Cannibal Corpse, to Steps.

Although one tune that always helps is "I Do Believe In Fairies". It's an orchestral tune from Peter Pan (the one with Jason Isaacs in it).
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:12, Reply)
I'll try and avoid mentioning the Clash in case Monty gets me so....
Happy: The Pogues - If I should Fall from Grace with God
Pixies - Doolittle
Very Best of the Beach Boys

Sad: Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Neil Young - Harvest
mid/late 90's Manics stuff

Peaceful/Monged Out: O.K. Computer, Mogwai - Young Team, SFA

Angry: Never Mind the Bollocks. Replacements - Let it Be. Sonic Youth
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:13, Reply)
Oooh
Doolittle. Yes! I forgot about that.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:17, Reply)
Actually..
There is one other song that helps in one mood.

Angry - Hammer Smashed Face - Cannibal Corpse
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:19, Reply)
I'll add in mine as well seeing as I asked the question and all...
On a Mission = Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
Happy = Face to Face - The New Way, Jackson United - Fell Into
Sad = This Is Not An Exit - Saves the Day
Angry = RATM - Sleep Now In The Fire, Audioslave - Cochise
Weird Mood = Anything by The Hives and The White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:31, Reply)
Hmm
I disagree on Chocise though, that's a happy tune for me.

Great tune while driving!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:47, Reply)
It is a
great driving tune. Although it used to make me drive quite fast, so I had to pay more attention to the speedo... same applies for The Prodigy!!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:51, Reply)
Sadly I don't drive
So any driving songs refer to when me and my housemate make a driving playlist (usually for when we go to Nottingham).

Bat Out Of Hell while driving the road towards Leek is not safe. Then again, neither is Rammstein, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, etc
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 11:55, Reply)
Haha
I don't think Rammstein is safe ever really!!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:09, Reply)
Cochise is very good
But don't you often think "You're just NOT 'Whole Lotta Love'!"
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:04, Reply)
I do often think that!
You are clever! :D
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:16, Reply)
I'm not, but I'll take that one anyway.
Ta like.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:19, Reply)
I have a few songs that remind me of events or the suchlike.
So they either make me really happy or really sad. Depending on the mood.

But Killing in The Name is guaranteed to perk me up, due to its connotations of nights out :) (They always play it at my favourite club. It's an indie club. So you get the cool kids screaming along and the "toocoolforyou" indie kids just being shoved to the side)
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:16, Reply)
.
They played that at Walkabout last time I was in there.

Was quite shocked!
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:44, Reply)
You've been in 5th?!
Fuck, that's a scary thought.
Dunno quite why. But it is.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 13:32, Reply)
In the car
if I'm in a good mood and the sun's shining: Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion
Happy but overcast: Pink Floyd - Animals
Need a pick me up: A compilation of Jean Michel Jarre.
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 12:46, Reply)
For sadness there's NIN
For all other emotions there's Idlewild
(, Wed 16 Sep 2009, 13:05, Reply)
Morning Spunkbuckets!
I have reappeared from a summer of hibernation and sex.
