Stoopid question
I want to convert my 200+ CD collection to MP3 and sell 'em. Finally. How much memory will 200+ CDs take up?

I wouldnt bother
CDs have fuck all resale value. I tried fleabaying some a few years back.

There's a tacky-as-fuck website
Called moneymagpie that'll buy any CDs. Even 10p each is worth more to me than they are at the minute, they're just taking up room in the house. Want rid

So you'll get 20 quid?
that hardly seems worth it.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:09, Reply)
Also, whatever you rip it to, you will need a backup copy
because the only guarantee with a hard drive is that it will fail.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:09, Reply)
I'm planning for that
I work for an electrical and audio-visual retailer so can get a portable hard drive on the cheap
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:14, Reply)
Will depend upon bitrate you choose.
PS Can anyone recommend a good freeware ripper? Audiograbber isn't quite up to the job now I'd like to convert at 320kb.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:03, Reply)
Exact Audio Copy is the only one worth bothering with

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:07, Reply)
Thanks Al.
I'll give it a go. I've decided it's time to rip all the rarities off all the freebie cover cds I've picked up over the years.

There are lots of good forums with info on how to set it up to rip in VBR
which gives you the best balance of compression to sounds quality. Alternatively if space isn't an issue, try converting your .wav files to FLAC, an album ends up being about 3-400MB but it's a lossless format.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:36, Reply)
VBR?
This is a whole new sack of monkeys for me. Looks like I'll be doing some investigation. Donkey shoes.

Variable Bit Rate
Encoding rate varies according to the complexity of the harmonic spectrum of the music during each timeslice.

I think.

Yeah, I don't know the size of the average CD in MB
I'm a technological fucktard :-)

I think he wants to know how big an audio CD is when coverted to mp3 format
rather than .wav

Have you tried, I don't know how to suggest this but maybe USE FUCKING GOOGLE.

^this
I love it when people are being clever-clogs, belittling others, and end up being completely wrong. What a massive failtarded twat.

It works out, at 129kbs, roughly 1.5mb/min, and disks are about 60-70 mins.

Cheers Eggy
That's all I was after :-)
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:38, Reply)
No worries mate =)

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:45, Reply)
You'll want to rip at hight than 129 though unless you like listening to shite quality

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 12:33, Reply)
He said hard-drive space was an issue.
I can't tell the differeance between anything above 182 though, in general, so that's what I go for, as I don't have a decent hi-fi system.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 13:08, Reply)
If you're concerned about memory for 200 CDs then you've probably not got enough
I ripped about 1000 when I first converted my collection.
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:08, Reply)
My computer has delted 50% of songs on every albu,m

Not whole albums that would be too easy, I have to individully check each album, fucking bollocks.

I blame I-Tunes

No one wants to buy 200 copies of Natural by Peter Andre

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:13, Reply)
I've only got 5 copies of that
The rest are Brother Beyond's debut album
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:15, Reply)
As no-one else has given you a ball park figure
I'm going to stick my neck out and say 15-20Gb.

You know all those sad weirdos with a massive vinyl collection, proper dust jacket bollocks who go rooting through charity shop collections every weekend? That's going to be me with CDs in a decade or so :(
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 11:58, Reply)
Sounds like Monty to me

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 12:05, Reply)
Nah, he doesn't own a CD player
the big shirter
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 12:20, Reply)
Well now...
My ipod has about 6000 tracks on it. They take up about 30GB of disk space, and mostly are ripped as 160kbps AAC files. At say 12 tracks per CD, that's about 500 CDs worth of audio.

Therefore 200 CDs ripped at twice the bitrate will take up about 80% of this space, so you're looking at something of the order of 25GB.

*yawns*

(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 12:29, Reply)
Just in case you care
you do know that technically if you sell the source CDs you should delete the MP3s or you'll be breaking the law?

Then again under UK law ripping your own CDs in the first place is illegal so whatever...
(, Wed 24 Feb 2010, 13:17, Reply)
People have been yapping about copyright law in work all day
