That thread has become unreadable due to fatty cake loving

So tell me your top 3 movies that I might not have seen, something a little obtuse but still excellent.

1. Nine Queens
2. Lives of Others
3. This is England

Benny & Joon
The Pest
What's Eating Gilbert Grape

EDIT: If you can't be bothered watching Gilbert Grape, you can catch a squirrel-bases synopsis of it in Family Guy, which is excellent.

(, Wed 26 May 2010, 13:39, Reply)
Copland
Sly Stallone trying his hand at a serious film. Crooked cops own an area of town and try to cover it up. Honest Sheriff Stallone gets honest on their asses.

Red Cliff - Epic Chinese fight-a-thon with LOTD-esque battle scenes.

Mr Brookes - Our Kevin Costner tries a semi-serious role. A wealthy pillar of the community, business type struggles to contain his brilliant serial killing alter-ego. Someone witnesses his latest murder and fun times ensue.

It's set in a 1930's newsroom, about an Editor trying to win back his ex-wife before she marries again
But that's circumstantial really, it's the fastest-talking film I've ever seen. The dialogue is absolutely whip-crack sharp. Tires you out trying to keep up

Orson Welles giving a masterclass in how to casually arrive in the middle of a film and blow everyone off screen in five minutes
Top Hat, just to try and make myself look even more masculine, is a Fred & Ginger film about, oh, I don't know, some romantic misunderstanding or another, with some fucking aMAZing dancing
(, Wed 26 May 2010, 13:59, Reply)
there's a female empowerment quote on calendars that says
"remember, everything Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did backwards and in heels".

Makes me smile.
(, Wed 26 May 2010, 14:02, Reply)
Yeah, Ginger said that herself, I think maybe after Fred went on to dance with Cyd Charisse
who was, I'm sorry to say, probably technically a better dancer than Ginger. But they never quite had the same chemistry. Fred Astaire can make anyone look good but all his films with Ginger, complete fluff although they were, had amazing sparkle to them

/awaits accusations of gayness
(, Wed 26 May 2010, 14:09, Reply)
Cyd and Gene all the way for me
Fred was technically the better dancer, but Gene had that sass. The magic ingredient. And Ginger would have been too saccharine with Gene.
Cyd and Gene.

Glengarry Glen Ross - Brilliant film, for salesman everywhere
Bad Leuitenant - The Harvey Kietel original, an amazing powerhouse of a performance, bleak.
Driller Killer - Abel Ferrara directs and stars in this 'video nasty' of its day. However, it is nothing of the sort is it is a shame it has been categorised as such.. It is an amazing descent into madness, quite affecting. Oh, and the directors commentary is easily the best you will ever hear.

if you can
try and find the dvd version with the theatrical subtitles on. they make the movie (in english). they don't just sit there, they fade in and out, disappear behind things, melt away. it's awesome.

it annoys me intensely that there's no version of the sequel on dvd with the same treatment.
