going to be one on the beach near me soon. Exciting moving beach engineering art!

no question. you people are getting stuck into routine too much
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:11, 104 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Yes but is it art?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:12, Reply)
I think so
I'll let you know once I've been to see it in a couple of weeks
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:13, Reply)
Do you need to ask?
It looks unuseful and ugly, therefore, must be Art.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:13, Reply)
you think they are ugly?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:14, Reply)
I think they're interesting
But not pretty. No, I don't think they're pretty. So, they're ugly.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:14, Reply)
fair enough

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:15, Reply)
was it Oscar Wilde
who made the beautiful/useful qualification?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:18, Reply)
depends
"I have found that all ugly things are made by those who strive to make something beautiful, and that all beautiful things are made by those who strive to make something useful.”

that one?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:22, Reply)
don't think so
thanks anyway. Going to plague me now. It's along the lines of evaluating if an object is useful or beautiful, and if it is neither, getting rid of it
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:23, Reply)
oh, the "don't have anything in your house that isn't beautiful or useful" one?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:24, Reply)
that would be it
it is Wilde then?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:25, Reply)
William Morris apparently
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:27, Reply)
I studied him. He was boring
I like Phillip Starke, he's my favourite designer. He's just cool as fuck.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:35, Reply)
Cheers
it was bothering my mind
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:35, Reply)

By that definition ...
How stands Vipros?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:07, Reply)
That's quite interesting
but the "space" in the URL got my hopes up too much.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:12, Reply)
I apologise

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:13, Reply)
That's ok

awesome
be cool if it works, and works well
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:17, Reply)
I had the same problem
I thought it was going to be a planetarium thing on the beach or something like that.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:14, Reply)
Mmmm
I don't know if I like it or not. I'm not a big fan of ART.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:13, Reply)
interesting fact (to me only)
Rodin's 'The Kiss' is an illustration of a story told in the Inferno
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:16, Reply)
The film with Paul Newman?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:23, Reply)
:P
you don't trick me into an earnest, worthy discussion that easily I'll have you know
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:24, Reply)
the book by Dante

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:24, Reply)
I got two thirds of the way through it and gave up.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:27, Reply)
I'm like that with most of your posts.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:28, Reply)
you get that far through?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:28, Reply)

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:30, Reply)
I can't.
You're just too damn irresistable.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:31, Reply)
You're going to have to join the back of the q.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:07, Reply)
I've not tried
one of those books that I feel I should read, but generally I end up reading some sci fi or fantasy. or rereading terry pratchett
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:28, Reply)
It's not that good, I was reading it because I thought it was worth reading
and to say that I read it. I wasn't enjoying it so I just gave up.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:29, Reply)
that's the best reason to stop reading something
almost every time I read something because I feel obliged to it turns out to be a disappointment.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:30, Reply)
Ha!
I managed to get through The Gulag archipelago by ALEXANDER SOLZHENITSYN. Don't ask me what it was about though because I can't remember.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:57, Reply)
give it a shot
but only read the Inferno part i.e. Hell. Purgatory and Heaven are really interesting if you've any interest in pre-Renaissance religious ideology or are just interested in development of religion in general/history, but they're quite heavy work.

Hell on the other hand is bizarre and occasionally brilliantly illustrated, and it gives you a huge frame of reference for understanding a lot of other works
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:30, Reply)
thanks :-)

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:31, Reply)
you're welcome
I may be an academic bore/ retard occasionally, but I know what is good to read

excellent
I do try and remember that not everyone likes the same books as me

Devil May Cry?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:33, Reply)
that was a good game
quite wanky in places though, particularly the ending sequence.

with that though, I'm going home to wait for the virgin engineer. hopefully he will give me a new box.

I don't play Playstation
but over the course of a few month's worth of Sundays, I finished that game at a friends house
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:36, Reply)
Dante's Inferno
It wasn't as good as God Of War though.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:57, Reply)
I know a lot about art, but I don't know what I like
and I like this.

Stuff where the the constuction and process is integralto the art is generally engaging.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:28, Reply)
Pfft!
Wank art mumbo jumbo.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:29, Reply)
You fucking pleb.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:30, Reply)
Stop trying to flirt with me.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:31, Reply)
That was said with utter distain.
all the "I don't get art" "I don't like science" "I don't like foreign films" shouldn't ever be considered a valid opinion it's just laziness.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:33, Reply)
I do get art.
I went to fucking art school.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:34, Reply)
Then why don't you show some respect for the effort and talent that this took?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:36, Reply)
because that doesn't
qualify it as art. It qualifies it for interest and respect, but not for relevance as an artistic work
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:37, Reply)
I wasn't dismissing the art.
I was dismissing Cave duck's description.

I was part of the 'I refuse to talk bollox' school of art.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:39, Reply)
Talking bollocks is an integral part of the art appreciation process.
You are therefore, in a class of one.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:51, Reply)
Not really.
There were a few of us who declined to play the game.

This is probably why I didn't get my BA. Well that and being a lazy cow.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:53, Reply)
You should have just said that you were your own installation and demanded your degree
While dressed in a beret and smoking a french fag.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:57, Reply)
I did smoke french fags for a while *laughs*

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:58, Reply)
That's 1st class honours then.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:03, Reply)
I agree
I love art, but I hate all the pretentious bollocks that is spouted around it.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:38, Reply)
I'm with BGB on that
art doesn't interest me unless it's finished and means something or is beautiful. That thing up there is neither, and mumbo-jumbo about construction as an ethic of art or whatever is definitely just wank
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:32, Reply)
I went to art school and know it when I hear it.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:32, Reply)
mostly I'd be with you on the construction as an ethic thing
but because this is a great piece of engineering it appeals on a number of levels.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:33, Reply)
Not at all
My Dad was an engineer and extremely practical man. I've inherited his interest in how things are actually made. It's actually a pragmatic artisan's view rather than some high falutin pretentious interpreting of the artists emotional motivation.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:37, Reply)
Then you have my apologies.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:41, Reply)
That's very kind, but not necessary
Having re-read my post, I can see how why you would think that. The bit about knowing a lot about art was supposed to just a daft reversal of what many people say when asked about art.

Besides I'll no doubt come out with something wanky and pretentious soon, so you may as well leave the insult in place, to save having to get out again later.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:51, Reply)
It's ok.
After three years at art school and hearing all the pretentious wank some of the students came out with, I get a little ranty when it rears it's ugly head.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:53, Reply)
What particular area/ media did/do you like to work in/with?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:57, Reply)
I have to go now.
I'll gaz you later.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:58, Reply)
Yeah, that's what all the girls say.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:04, Reply)
that's why this appeals to me
particularly because of the type of construction. also, it's going to be strolling down the beach, powered by the wind. what's not to like?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:32, Reply)
they're interesting
but not necessarily art
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:34, Reply)
thinking about it
I'm not sure whether I consider that type of thing art or not. I assumed it was because I was told as much.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:35, Reply)
I have some beans that may interest you.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:43, Reply)
Try rubbing candle wax on before you start.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 15:54, Reply)
Should I turn it over before I start or just turn it around as I go?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:04, Reply)
I dont think it matters, as long you make sure you've primed the centrifugal pump.

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:09, Reply)

That sounds exciting
we have a load of elephants at the moment. Some are quite cool, but I preferred it when they did it with Cows in Manchester a few years back.

god I'm bored :(
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:17, Reply)
So you preferred it when they had a art installation with cows?

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:20, Reply)
It seems trite to do it again, but with elephants

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:31, Reply)

Anyone taking part this year?
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:28, Reply)
Sadly no
as there would be a chance that I'd be away when some were posted to me

Next year maybe :D
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:32, Reply)
I haven't received any yet
But then it's not quite the deadline just yet. A good mix of my music came out though.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:33, Reply)
A lot of my music on my iTunes I don't listen to
Doing a random shuffle of 10 songs just now, I'd only listen to about half of them. And I think that was a lucky shuffle.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:36, Reply)
Yeah, my shuffle was pretty lucky too
Didn't hit on all the crap I downloaded acquired for a friend's wedding.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 16:40, Reply)
hahaha I'm sure I'd have to edit it.
