(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 18:10, Reply)
OKR is being done in a warm-up run on the Friday night
This is unfortunately why I can't make Al's bash, as T decided we were bettering off doing the "awkward" ones (OKR, Whitechapel, Islington, etc) the night before, rather than trying to shepherd a large group of people in a big circuit round London all on a Saturday. Everything on the Saturday has been confined in a nice little triangle bounded by Park Lane, Fleet Street and Oxford Circus.

Capybaras
Hydrochoerus Hydrochaeris.Largest living rodent on the planet. Closely related to chinchillas and guinea pigs but a hell of a lot bigger. There are incidences of them being domesticated and kept as pets (in fact I think one was reported in the Times not so long ago). According to Wikipedia, they can grow to around 1m30 and weigh around 65kg. That's one hefty guinea pig.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:25, Reply)
they sound horrible

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:26, Reply)
BUT THEY'RE SO CUTE!
Come on, it's only about the size of an overweight border collie.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:27, Reply)
They're nothing on baby platypodes

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:28, Reply)
Fair point.
But those gorgeous little juvenile platypum won't be babies forever...

(Which is, of course, a crap counterargument, because one could equally say that those beautiful capybara won't be alive forever, and will one day be decomposing on a plain in South America, there carcasses being picked at by crows and vultures. Won't be so cute then, will they? Will they?)
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:31, Reply)
Yes, big platypodes are cute as well though.
Your argument is invalid.

I don't think they're that cute. They're cute, but not as cute as otters, or Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:32, Reply)
I'm just bewildered by this statement

(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 18:26, Reply)
Platypudula are full of win, whatever age they are.
Did you know they can detect electric fields with their bills?

I think the capybara is cute in the same way as a badger. Otters would probably be easier to cuddle, as would platypernalia, but a badger or a capybara has a similar appeal to a medium-sized dog.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:36, Reply)
Oh wow. They're like mutants with superpowers.
Ahh, I see. I'm not really a dog person. The closest to dogs I like are seals/sea lions. They're amazing to hug too...

Quite blatantly not me, I'm behind the camera
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:39, Reply)
You've hugged a seal?
That's awesome. I am insanely jealous. (Don't know if you've read any Gerald Durrell, but he has a wonderful story about making an Elephant Seal cry.)

I like dogs. I would like them more if they didn't shit everywhere.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:43, Reply)
I swear I told you this story last time
including the bit where a friend of mine spanked a seal.

I'm definitely more of a cat person. Without a doubt.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:45, Reply)
Quite possibly, but the sieve-like properties of my memory have increased in proportion with age and alcohol intake.
Though the seal-spanking bit is ringing a bell somewhere in the empty crypts of my cranium.

I don't think I'm one or t'other, I like cats and dogs, but I think I'd rather own a cat if I had to make the choice.
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:50, Reply)
I'm surprised I remembered anything, I kind of cringe internally whenever I think back to then.
I'm trying to find the video I have of the seal, I should be more organised with my files :(

This list includes birds with solid beaks, hamsters - syrian and roborovskis, gerbils, Dobermans, Akitas, Yorkies and persians.

This list is not exhaustive
(, Wed 16 Jun 2010, 17:09, Reply)
I get the feeling that animals get added to the list frequently

Yep, German Shephards have never made the list, despite being bitten by them more than once. They're just so goddamned fluffy and cute
