Allrightyroo
I'm off my crutches tomorrow afternoon, I'm almost able to walk without a limp AND I have a whole block of chocolate for the weekend. My exams are over, the school term has a week to go, and I'm wrapped up snuggly warm in my house listening to the rain.
Oh, and my flights, insurance and accommodation are all booked!

I realise this is an insufferably cheerful post, but I really don't care at the moment. I'm happy, which is a good thing.

if you really MUST have something else to talk about - why do the weatherpeople always seem to underestimate how cold or hot it's going to be?
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:19, 158 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
weather people
here at least they err on the side of caution because of the slating they get when they get it dramatically wrong.

that said, I work next to the Met Office, and the current weather report for Exeter is often wrong, despite them being able to look out the window to see what it is doing.
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:21, Reply)
/shakes head
that's really rather shit.

I know someone who works the servers
In that there Met Office, Exeter.

Thats cos there's someone in every circle who needs a good cheap bumming every now and then.

I should probably restrain myself
I've got to go and talk to some quality-assessment panel in ten minutes' time about what I think of my department and the way it treats its postgrads. Probably wouldn't look too good if I walked into the room and started pecking anybody with blonde hair.

you can do it!
Just do deep breaths, straighten your feathers and go and attack some first years when it's all over.

I do know a few people there myself
Though they're more involved with the measurement side than the mahoosive computer models. Last time I was down that way they showed me the server room and told me about the sexy new computers they were going to install. Though they might have had those confiscated after the newspapers got into a massive frumpy flounce because they got the prediction for last summer a bit wrong.

Is it, though? Is it really by-the-by? true feelings? I only ask because I've watched a lot of Murder She Wrote and have come to know the dangers of supressing your true feelings.

probably even closer to my office actually.
I'm going to start waving in the direction of the train track, what time are you getting to london?

Of course you are, you're a contrary bitch.
You can't help it.
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:27, Reply)
yet you can't find
any rational scientific reason as to why this would not be so. That makes it FACT
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:27, Reply)
Well I was going to go for the argument
that the predicting isn't hard in itself but that fact that weather is a chaotic system makes it very hard to measure accuratly enough.
Forecasting is not hard, I do it all the time, but forecasting weather is immensly difficult.
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:30, Reply)
I understand that,
it just seems that the weather forecasters here seem keen on making it look like it'll be a mild winter, forecasting a week of days at 15, 16 degrees. There has not been one day since saturday where we have gotten above 12 degrees.
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:32, Reply)
They do their best but it's still going to have 10-20% margin of error even on a 5 day forecast.

(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:36, Reply)
where did you pull that percentage from eh? ;-)

(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:40, Reply)
from my stats pocket.

(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:41, Reply)
ahhh well that explains everything.

(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:46, Reply)
I'd disagree
but mainly the terminology

my work involves prediction, the science is really quite exact, it's just that the data isn't available or isn't up to the job a lot of the time
(, Thu 17 Jun 2010, 10:28, Reply)
yeah that's basically the road I was going down.
