But, If I'm with Mark and he's a bit drunk, It's raining men or Dancing Queen. He does live them.

for funsies , but I'll dance to pretty much anything.
I'm currently bumming off the Dresden Dolls though, I love the Shores of California
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:38, Reply)
DD supporting NIN. Don't recall much of them, but Coin Operated Boy was awesome.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were great live, but the crowd was full of preened teen indies, who looked like they'd spent hours getting ready to go to a fucking GIG.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:42, Reply)
So I was saved from all the pretentious indie crap. You don't get dressed up to go to a gig for fucks sake, you dress comfortably and sensibly for being crushed and jumping around. Apart from Emilie Autumn, I got very dressed up for that cos that's part of the fun with EA, everyone put so much effort in to suit the mood.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:48, Reply)
Especially when some girls and boys (and some I wasn't sure of) came out of the crowd horrified at how sweaty they'd got.

I played that the last time I went to Afflecks. It was full of pretentious androgynous wankers with side-swept fringes. Sigh. I remember when it used to be cool...
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:01, Reply)
It's a shame they're on hiatus. Although I suspect Amanda Palmer's solo act is pretty good too. She was lovely when I met her.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:54, Reply)
I'm so jealous! Have you heard the song Leeds United from her solo album?
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:56, Reply)
I've not gotten round to buying any of her solo stuff. And I only met her very briefly, but she did give me a flower..

NIN - March of the Pigs
or
Pendulum - The Island Pt 2
or
Refused - New Noise

I've only got the Fragile though *sadface*
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:54, Reply)
Ok, I know I'm rather fond of NIN (litotes ftw), but I'd have figured you'd have more.
I cannot recommend any particular albums, they're all works of art in my book, with some enjoyable differences between them.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:57, Reply)
and have experience of several of the albums, but mainly Pretty hate machine and the Fragile.
Knowing what you do of my musical tastes, recommend me an album, and show your workings.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:00, Reply)
Pretty Hate Machine is great for it's early 90s, minimalistic synths and dark feel. Standout tracks: Terrible Lie, Something I Can Never Have, Head Like A Hole.
Broken (technically an EP) is pure rage, angst and nihilism. Standout tracks: Wish, Happiness in Slavery.
The Downward Spiral is his biggest critical and commercial success. It's best off listened to in one sitting, as it's a concept album. More refined industrial sounds than Broken's unbound hate, and achingly beautiful at times. Standout tracks: Closer, Reptile, Hurt.
The Fragile you know, got panned a bit because people expected/wanted TDS part 2. Standout tracks: The Fragile, La Mer, The Great Below, The Big Comedown.
With Teeth was made some time after The Fragile, once Trent had cleaned up. It's his most accessible album, but still has some deeply personal moments. Standout tracks: Only, Sunspots, Beside you in time.
Year Zero is another concept album, set in a near-future where America's ruled by a totalitarian Christian government. There's an entire backstory behind it all (including coverups, alien/god manifestations etc), but even without knowing that it's a solid album. It's more electronic that TDS/The Fragile. Standout tracks: Survivalism, Capital G, The Great Destroyer, In This Twilight.
Ghosts I-IV is a 36 track, all-instrumental affair that started as a project to see if they could release an entire album, start to finish, in a month. The first quarter is free to download online, the rest is a pittance. Lots of different styles, mostly calm and melodic.
The Slip is the last album, released for free online. It feels like a compilation of songs that didn't make the last 2 albums, or ideas he had that he wanted to record under NIN. Standout tracks: Discipline, Echoplex, Lights in the Sky.
There are plenty of remix albums too, but above's the main discography.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:13, Reply)
Short answer: Acquire The Downward Spiral, and listen to it from start to finish.

yes, this. I dance like a spaz, so I have to be reeeeeeally drunk before I'll venture on to the dancefloor. Usually by which time I've lost all coordination anyway, so it just makes it worse.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:53, Reply)
Dog on Wheels by Belle and Sebastian. For some reason I always had the trumpet bit in my head (along with that buzz from too-loud speakers) the morning after going to the local indie/rock disco.
DOesn't take much for me to dance (badly) though

(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:00, Reply)
but as we've established you can't go wrong with Pendulum
Also (depending on where I am, obv)
VNV Nation - Chrome
Hollywood Undead - Everywhere I Go
Hadouken! - Mic Check
Paramore - Emergency
and for a reminder of a time when I had enough hair to blind a man at three feet...
Machine Head - Davidian
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 13:56, Reply)
The first two and last two records are great, and I've seen them play live twice now and they were brilliant both times.

it's only recently that I remembered that I really like Slayer.
I saw them last year, and thought they were dreadful. Tossers as well.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:01, Reply)
and I haven't been particularly into anything they've done since The Burning Red, apart from Imperium. But Davidian is a fucking mental tune
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:05, Reply)
because I liked a couple of tunes. I listened to it before Sonisphere last year, and it was absolutely fucking awful. Some of the guitar stuff is ok, but for the most part it was dross.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:07, Reply)
Burn My Eyes and The Blackening are amazing though.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:15, Reply)
The others all contain some cracking tracks, but then some poor tracks.
e.g. The More Things Change. Ten Ton Hammer - Great. Blistering - Poor.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:17, Reply)
But I prefer Momentum or some of the tracks off Futureperfect.

Nazareth: 'Hair of the Dog'
Ram Jam Band: 'Black Betty'
Funkadelic: 'Super Stupid'
Hendrix: 'Crosstown Traffic'
The Fire: 'My Father's Name was Dad'
Richard Kent Style ‘Go Go Children’
Stooges: ‘Shake Appeal’
Ultrafunk: ‘Kung Fu Man’
Brick: ‘Dazz’
I’ll stop now.

actually, I have no idea. I don't dance.
These days at gigs I'll stand outside the mosh pit staring at the band and nodding slightly.

My ex used to run it (has handed over the reins this year), and I used to help out there (general bod work and program writing). The last one (2008) proved too much for me, as it was the first one after we'd broken up.

Massive goth/metal superclub on the Sunday night.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:27, Reply)
at the O2 academy in Birmingham isn't bad for a rock/metal night from what I recall, and the drinks are cheap. That said, the only time I've been my sister got me paralytically drunk, so it could have been really shit and I wouldn't have noticed.

But there are a few songs, like the ones I listed above, that make me want to join the crowd.
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:01, Reply)
I haven't seen any bands recently who have songs that make me want to do that, and one of the metallica gigs I was basically sat on a precipice.
I may get involved when Slayer or The Cult or Bigelf or Rammstein are playing at the weekend if they rock especially hard
(, Wed 28 Jul 2010, 14:06, Reply)
I can't wait for the mrs to see how awesome they are live
