That thread is too long for me to join in.
I'm having to do some work outside work hours. This happens to me very very rarely, but happens to others from my office an awful lot.

They don't seem to mind too much, whereas I tend to be massively resentful. Do you have to bring work home? Does it piss you off?

Alt: anyone heard any good new bands recently?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:34, 68 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I saw a great new band at the Phil recently...

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:38, Reply)
did you get great seats?

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:39, Reply)
I did, as it happens!

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:40, Reply)
haha good news

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:48, Reply)
I wouldn't mind being a teacher, but the work you'd have to do at home has put me right off.
I couldn't imagine anything worse, unless you love your job. But still it's asking a bit much of you.
How big a workload is it?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:38, Reply)
I was staying with my other half's sister and her bloke at the weekend
they are both teachers and by the sounds of it have to work late into the evening every night of the week, and on sundays

fuck that

I don't have a great deal to do. Invoices and forecasts for year end. Unfortunate timing that they come out today and need to be done by thursday and because of my secondment means I don't have the time to do it.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:41, Reply)
my mum was a primary school teacher
she worked evenings, weekends and holidays. it's hard work for bugger-all pay, when you consider what teachers contribute.

moar pay for teachers, doctors and nurses, i say.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:50, Reply)
And scientists!

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:54, Reply)

i said, and lawyers! anybody? no? why are you all carrying flaming pitchforks......

civil engineers could do with more
considering that we wouldn't have most of the things that are essential that we take for granted without them.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:57, Reply)
I would cheerfully bet
that you get paid a shitsight more than I do, though. And I'm trying to find a cure for cancer.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:01, Reply)
Yeah, but on a results basis...
Civil Engineers have built loads of things. How many cancers have you cured?

I like this sentiment!
everyone thinks we just work short hours and have big holidays. Fair play, though, I mostly love me job, it just gets in the way of having a life sometimes
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:30, Reply)
Home and work
are pretty much combined for me at the moment. Though apparantly we're meeting in a pub tomorrow for my tutorial.

Alt Q: no good new bands, but some good new (to me) songs
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:39, Reply)
I wasn't asking you student types. you wouldn't understand
what new songs?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:43, Reply)
mostly some electro stuff
and because I was in a bad mood I went hunting and managed to accumulate a playlist of terrible music to cheer me up and/or depress me a bit more
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:47, Reply)
I got snowed in last week
on Thursday and Friday. Part of my job is to administer the remote access side of things.

I was extremely resentful when I was expected to remote in to work on days when I would otherwise have been at work in order to do the work I was contractually obliged to do.

Is this unreasonable? I wanted to be playing Gran Turismo 5 instead.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:40, Reply)
I need Gran Turismo 5.
I can't believe I sold my Playstation to fund flights to Milan. For ninety quid. Worth it though.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:49, Reply)
Some of the cars they have on there are pretty sweet
I've had a BMW 2002 turbo and a couple of old Alfas.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:57, Reply)
Well I'm still at work.
I generally don't give a fuck unless I have something specific to do after work.

Alt Q: Yes, yes I fucking did and they were brilliant. It's probably very very old news to the rest of you but THAT FUCKING TANK were amazing when i saw them last week and my ex-bassist's new band Turbowolf are bloody ace too. Just come back off tour with Korn and I'm sure they're gonna be big in the next year.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:45, Reply)
I don't ever have to work from home
in fact, working in a lab makes that kind of difficult. I am still at work now, however, and frequently have to come in early/stay late/come at weekends to check or start experiments etc.
However since they don't give a fuck what I do as long as I get my work done it seems fair - certainly I'd rather have the flexibility to feck off home early or go to the pub for lunch as and when I feel like it than work 9-5.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:49, Reply)
my contractual hours are 9.30-5.30
i am usually in by 8.30 and actively feel guilty if i ever leave at 5.30. most often i work til 7.30-8pm, but if i have a lot on, it can be a whole run of post-midnight finishes.

theoretically i can log-in and work from home, but in practice i inevitably need textbooks or files, so it never works. i will, however, be doing the Trainee's appraisal from home (whilst watching america's next top model) tonight.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:51, Reply)
is it worth it?
I couldn't fucking stand working till half 7 or 8

as far as I'm concerned my job is the least important bit of my life and it already takes up too much fucking time.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:53, Reply)
I'm one of those that work to live
I actively resent the amount of time I'm expected to put myself out in order to earn money.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:55, Reply)
that is very much my attitude

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:56, Reply)
And that is why I loathe people that leech off the State.
Jealousy.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:58, Reply)
But are you expected to put in those hours
or do you just have a ridiculous work ethic?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 17:53, Reply)
both
it is expected that you will be here if necessary, and i am also someone who sunbathes with blackberry in hand when on holiday!

but i could also cut down my hours if i were more efficient during the day and didn't come on here or chat to colleagues - however, that is how i break up my day and make it enjoyable.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:02, Reply)
Similar
I have no doubt I could get my work done 9-5 with ease if I didn't cock about on here so much or go for 90 minute lunches and 45 minute coffee breaks in the afternoon!
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:04, Reply)
oh so so so much this

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:17, Reply)
When I work I'm not gonna take lunch breaks. Just eat at my desk and carry on as normal.

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:25, Reply)
*Imagines Trainee's appraisal will read*
'Worked the office well and, used their posture to great effect during the 'file carrying' task'

And various other model-type-comments.

occasionally I have to meet customers here at night
which is less than ideal, especially since I work in the ghetto
I've never had a problem but it still scares me, there are loads of things to bash me with in here, and no one to hear me if I scream

alt: neon trees and paper tongues are alright, also Versant *pimps*

I'm currently doing a cartoon about my work - that counts right?
And no, it doesn't piss me off. It's keeping my mind from the fact that I'm skinted and I have to go out on Wednesday :/
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:06, Reply)
Sometimes I do. Yes, it does but not that much - it's very rare.
Alt: Nope. None.

Techy question here
I'm trying to torrent something but none of the files for anything work. I downloaded a different torrentclient, but still no response at all. Could the IT department simply be blocking large files?

sorry darling

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:44, Reply)
I teach so
I always have to bring work home. I rarely resent it, though, unless it stops me doing fun things. Problem is concentration
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:22, Reply)
I've just been speaking to my c/card people because I was a silly billy and got confused with my number and locked my account.
She said it's one of the lowest balances she's seen for a while : )

And here I was thinking I was letting it get out of control again.

Sorry Monty.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:27, Reply)
The only time I bring work home
is for the specific purpose of working from home, although when I do do this tend to work longer hours than I normally do at work anyway. I wouldn't consider doing work at a weekend. I do occasionally work late if there's a pressing deadline to meet, or a late meeting I have to attend (which is quite frequent) but that's Monday - Friday and I can take the time back if I need to.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:56, Reply)
What do you think about the sacking of Hughton DG?

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 18:59, Reply)
It's a bit shite, Jeff.
The club's the most stable it's been since Robson; a few bad results shouldn't be the catalyst to dismiss the manager unless the club is right at the bottom of the table.

Alan Pardew is the bookie's favourite. FFS.

Amberl- what sort of electro are you into?
Warp type stuff or Detroit type stuff or something else?
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 19:07, Reply)
I've been listening to a bit of Tonto's Expanding Head Band

(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 19:10, Reply)
I couldn't tell you the name of the type
but recently my playlist has looked like B12, Digitonal, Autechre, Aphex Twin Plaid etc. I dunno if electro is even if it's name, but it sounds like that to me
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 19:36, Reply)
I love Plaid and Autechre. The other day in York, a limo drove past me and Windowlicker started playing in my head. That's how sad I am.
I was heavily into Warp & Rephlex stuff when I was 22/23.

You'll like Vector Lovers and his record label Iwari. Some mates of mine have had records out on that label, another has a tune about to be released on Bunker and another's putting together a demo for Ovum.
(, Mon 6 Dec 2010, 19:48, Reply)
I shall check it out definitely
always looking for good stuff in the same category, but I don't even really know what the category is called!
