What's to say 'down' is the correct or 'standard' position for a toilet seat? Why are we men accused of not putting the seat down, why don't women ever put it up (as it were)....huh?

think about it from a % perspective. Mr has the seat up for most of the time, but down some of the time, Mrs has it down all the time, There is therefore more chance of it needing to be down than up.

PLus if you leave it up the feng shui fairies can escape, and you will never be rich, or something like that apparently. :)

It takes far less effort to put a toilet seat down, than to raise one up. A woman who complains about these things is clearly taking the piss.
btw, people urinate more frequently than defecate, especially if they have been on the piss. So, a man may easily need the seat up 4-8x more frequently than down.
And considering that the seat only goes up to prevent accidently getting it wet... men are already meeting women more than half way.

I reckon,
the "out of use" position of the toilet should be both seat and lid down. Then both sexes have to lift up some part of the apparatus whatever needs to be evacuated. Also has the advantage of preventing toilet water spashing toward your toothbrush upon flushing.

I think this is all a myth.
No-one in real life cares - it's just a plot device for bad sitcoms.

I know of not a single person, male or female, who, when faced with a toilet seat in the "wrong" position, would spend time and effort complaining about it as if that's somehow easier than just changing it.

It's not just the seat
It's the LID too. Why oh why do so many people completely ignore the fact that toilets have lids? I think it's horrid to see a toilet with an open lid. When a female has finished using the toilet - and leaves the seat down, but the lid up(!) it drives me to despair.

Once when I was house-hunting, I even closed the lid of the toilet in front of the estate agent. It was up, so I automatically put it down as soon as I saw it when we entered the bathroom.

That way anyone, of any age or gender, living in the house or otherwise, who ate something dodgy and is having a brown alert emergency, will be able to dash into the smallest room, sit down, and let nature take its course without

I now have a possible explanation
I used to wonder about that too. I'm female, but grew up sharing a bathroom with two brothers and quickly learned that there are bigger things to worry about than whether the seat is up (like whether the floor is wet). Personally, I'd rather they left the seat up than didn't put it up at all (and left the drips for me to wipe up). So until recently I really couldn't care less.

However, I now live in a small apartment with a very small bathroom, as do most of my friends. This generally means there's some form of storage above the toilet and I have quickly learnt that the lid is there primarily to stop things like hairbrushes falling in.

My answer...
The toilet is left with both seat and lid down.

It means whoever has to use the toilet needs to move the seat, so nobody gets an unfair advantage in the 'having to lift the toilet seat' stakes, but more importantly, it is just much nicer to leave the toilet closed...
It means when you flush the toilet it contains any splashing from the flush to the toilet itself (the typical toilet being able to easily move particles to the other side of the room, usually just next to your toothbrush sitting next to the sink) and the covering of the bowl means nothing can be dropped in and gives the use of the toilet as a handy seat for putting on socks or whatever else if you don't feel like balancing against the radiator. Also it just looks nicer...
