This is a question Waste of money

I once paid a small fortune to a solicitor in a legal case. She got lost on the way to court, turned up late with the wrong papers and started an argument with the judge, who told her to "shut up, for the love of God". A stunning investment.

Thanks to golddust for the suggestion

I've ordered a custom guitar
It's going to take about a year to build, but when it's done it'll look something like this:

The artwork is from q4nobody's amazing gif. For those of you who don't know, the girl in the picture is Jessie...

It'll be the most expensive thing I own apart from my house... waste of money? No fucking way (although I bet Jess would disagree with me!)

It looks just marvellous, Prof :)
I'm sure she'd love it too

A fitting tribute
have a click

I've always fancied having something made by the Fender custom shop.
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:06, closed)
I'd normally loathe that sort of thing
but that picture works rather well

a Jackson though? not so sure.
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:08, closed)
I knew that someone would question me choosing Jackson ;)
I love the shape of the Kelly, and the lesser model I currently have is one of the nicest playing guitars I own... that'll do for me!
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 14:15, closed)
good enough reasoning for me too
the shape of the one in the pic goes very well with that colour and the image on it too, which helps make it an excellent choice
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 14:31, closed)
Excellent
I rather like this
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:15, closed)
Out of curiousity
Why does it take a year to build?
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:18, closed)
It's made out of matchsticks

(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:21, closed)
As far as I can figure out...
...it's partly the time they need to make the guitar, and partly fitting it into their existing workload.

The guy in the shop I ordered it through said to allow a year, but it might be sooner. Suits me, it gives me time to save up! :D

That, or it's made of matchsticks ;)

Mostly.
Custom shops also tend to batch jobs into runs plus some processes require time, so your Kelly is likely to end up being cleared along with a bunch of others, especially if it's a UV-accelerated clear.

Things like shaping the neck release internal tensions within the wood which balanced during seasoning. Glueing bits up add moisture and temporary tensions also. Rushing through those to subsequent processes can leave you with wood that has moved, making things non-straight or twisty. Very common.

A year is a short period of time to receive a custom. IIRC, ESP and others aren't too far off that mark either. Try checking the lead time on real boutique luthiers! Up to 14yrs in some case.

UV accelerated clear?
Yes, the waiting for wood to settle etc was kind of what I assumed.

14 years lead time is KERAZY!

EDIT: Although I bet real boutique luthiers charge a lot more than Jackson... :)

A friend of mine is a Luthier
and Lute maker Very rich Arabs will wait up to 15 years for one of his hand made works of art .

There's some truly spectacular workmanshop there
Those multi-tier soundholes are amazing!

An original tribute
and fantastic at that. However, I think the obvious pun may be too offensive and bad taste.
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 13:20, closed)
Something about my instrument?
Do you know what, I hadn't even thought of that... I'm a shadow of my former self!
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 14:17, closed)
beauty
you wanna sling a pair of bareknuckle warpigs in it and let rip. very therapeutic.
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 14:26, closed)
EMGs, dude
In this case, white ones that they can paint over :)
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 14:44, closed)
that is the OPPOSITE of a waste of money
it is jewel of great gorgeousness that you will love and treasure every day that you own it and every time that you play it.

that is...
...extra super duper cool. Nicely done.

Funny seeing the 'Jackson?' convo just up there...
Initially that was my reaction too (despite being fully aware of your taste in guitars) and then I got to thinking about it...

Really, a Les Paul or a Strat with the lovely Jessie on it would be a little bit... hmm... Brian Adams... if you get my drift. The guitars themselves are just far too common for a lovely lass and a thrash master such as your good selves.

It does give her a sort of avant garde hair-do, but it works. It totally works. And as for it being a waste of money, well, I spent £1200 on a 1960s 12-string electric with a whammy arm. After I've spent half an hour tuning it I dare not touch the thing...
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 21:13, closed)
Glad you approve, dude ;)

EDIT: Who the fuck puts a whammy arm on a 12-string? The Kelly that I've already got has got a Floyd Rose, and that's bad enough! The thought of your guitar is giving me the fear!
(, Mon 4 Oct 2010, 23:42, closed)
i have a locking nut and whammy on my yamaha strat type plank
you can whammy the fucker all day and it never looses its tune.
in fact i hardly ever have to tune it.
(, Tue 5 Oct 2010, 0:19, closed)
Some kind of demented tuning freak...
That said, it's actually got a set of rolling saddles on the bridge and the whammy is behind that, thus it stays in tune beautifully. It's great for lovely thick fuzzy chords that bend in a woozy, hazy kind of way.

Like, totally.

Locking nuts (as mentioned above by amoebaboy) are great too, but for me the rolling bridge saddles are where it's at.

Guitars
I, too, have a custom built Fender Telecaster Thinline lookalike. It cost rather a lot, and is just the most gorgeous thing. Sadly, I'm still a crap beginner, but I don't care!

Beautiful.
*clicks* (for the right reasons. I don't know either you or the late Jessie, but it seems like a very worthwhile click).

This.
(, Tue 5 Oct 2010, 12:22, closed)
almost this
I only know of you and Jessie from this strange place, but she seemed genuinely lovely, and you seem a top chap, as far as complete internet strangers go.
I'm sure she would have been delighted with this.
Well played sir.
(, Tue 5 Oct 2010, 16:40, closed)
that's a lovely idea
and a perfect way to combine two things that you love dearly.
