I've ordered a custom guitar
It's going to take about a year to build, but when it's done it'll look something like this:



The artwork is from q4nobody's amazing gif. For those of you who don't know, the girl in the picture is Jessie...

It'll be the most expensive thing I own apart from my house... waste of money? No fucking way (although I bet Jess would disagree with me!)

As far as I can figure out...
...it's partly the time they need to make the guitar, and partly fitting it into their existing workload.

The guy in the shop I ordered it through said to allow a year, but it might be sooner. Suits me, it gives me time to save up! :D

Mostly.
Custom shops also tend to batch jobs into runs plus some processes require time, so your Kelly is likely to end up being cleared along with a bunch of others, especially if it's a UV-accelerated clear.

Things like shaping the neck release internal tensions within the wood which balanced during seasoning. Glueing bits up add moisture and temporary tensions also. Rushing through those to subsequent processes can leave you with wood that has moved, making things non-straight or twisty. Very common.

A year is a short period of time to receive a custom. IIRC, ESP and others aren't too far off that mark either. Try checking the lead time on real boutique luthiers! Up to 14yrs in some case.

Yes, the waiting for wood to settle etc was kind of what I assumed.

14 years lead time is KERAZY!

Initially that was my reaction too (despite being fully aware of your taste in guitars) and then I got to thinking about it...

Really, a Les Paul or a Strat with the lovely Jessie on it would be a little bit... hmm... Brian Adams... if you get my drift. The guitars themselves are just far too common for a lovely lass and a thrash master such as your good selves.

It does give her a sort of avant garde hair-do, but it works. It totally works. And as for it being a waste of money, well, I spent £1200 on a 1960s 12-string electric with a whammy arm. After I've spent half an hour tuning it I dare not touch the thing...

i have a locking nut and whammy on my yamaha strat type plank
you can whammy the fucker all day and it never looses its tune.
in fact i hardly ever have to tune it.

Some kind of demented tuning freak...
That said, it's actually got a set of rolling saddles on the bridge and the whammy is behind that, thus it stays in tune beautifully. It's great for lovely thick fuzzy chords that bend in a woozy, hazy kind of way.

Like, totally.

Locking nuts (as mentioned above by amoebaboy) are great too, but for me the rolling bridge saddles are where it's at.
