up there with the old 'want to buy some speakers' van scam

(, Mon 22 May 2023, 13:35, archived)
I used to work in a HiFi store so I can generally spot when someone's been ripped off
quite a few times I've had this old "oh, I've got an amazing stereo system, these speakers, well, there's a story with them, such a bargain, this guy in a van was fitting out a recording studio around the corner from where I live in Derby..." from a friend and if they can't tell they've been diddled, and they're not a cunt then I don't say anything.

Richer Sounds, wasn't it?

(, Mon 22 May 2023, 13:42, archived)
Did I sell you a Sherwood amplifier and some Eltax speakers?
because they're out of warranty by now.

I have a Cambridge Audio CD player that has just effectively died, the drawer won't open.
It's about 12 years old (hi spanishfly!) so no big deal, do they take those in at the shops for recycling?

Might get another CD player at some point but for non-vinyl listening I just use Sonos speakers.

I just don't think anecdotes are my forte.

(, Mon 22 May 2023, 13:47, archived)
I think all the manufacturers at that time used the same mechanisms
didn't matter if it was a basic Cambridge Audio or a high-end Arcam or something, they had better PSUs and digital-audio converters though.

They can repair it for you if you take it back to Richer Sounds and it probably won't be expensive but if it were me I'd just go on Facebook Marketplace and find someone selling a CD player near me. You can get a pretty nice Sony, Marantz, Denon or something for bugger all.

Helpful consumer advice but not a great anecdote.
(, Mon 22 May 2023, 13:58, archived)
yeah I had a look for new ones, a Marantz entry-level model was £300 quid or something stupid.
I do have a workaround which is playing the CD through my Xbox, then using my sonos setup to send the sound from the TV to the speakers. But it's a bit of a faff. I'd rather just be able to route a CD player through my mixer.
(, Mon 22 May 2023, 14:07, archived)
that's the exact model I have, with Raw Power stuck in it :'(

(, Mon 22 May 2023, 14:26, archived)

so much better than Bowie's knobbish version

Mission speakers and a Cambridge amp
(, Mon 22 May 2023, 13:43, archived)
Yeah, Cambridge was alright
Their genius was the incentive scheme meant you could make money out of customer service as well as commission AND customers could return things for refund for a couple of days after purchase so the staff were motivated to make customers happy as much as to sell stuff. The commission was paid on profit rather than outright sales so we always knew what stock was good value (no point selling people shit, they'd just bring it back) and had a big profit margin.

We sold A LOT of speaker cables and connectors!

I've got a Cambridge amp, had it for years and it's entirely fit for purpose

I'd never seen them
but it looks like they actually make their own watches. Most fashion brands simply add their logo to a cheap, mass-manufactured watch and put a huge margin on it.
