I hated that shit when it was first broadcast

Michael Palin's portrayal of Cardinal Richelieu

I was disappointed, but frankly unsurprised, that in the cartoon series they glossed over the 'white saviour' subplot of Penis Fogg saving that slag from death via 'suttee' which is front and forward in Verne's original text.
I put it to you that in the 'politically correct' days of 1980s animated television, the ritual slaughter of wives as part of the funerary process of India's brahmin caste was considered a topic too challenging for the 'age 7-12' target demographic, and was therefore glossed over, to the detriment of source authenticity.
(, Sun 30 Mar 2025, 9:24, Reply)
They actually included that in the cartoon though, as far as I remember.

For me, I find Dogtanian's relationship with his servant Planchet to be fundamentally at odds with the Muskehounds' stated ethos of 'helping everybody'.
Yes, Dogtanian can perhaps be argued to be 'helpin' ev'ryboddyyy' by providing a remunerated position to the otherwise potentially unemployed anthropomorphised bear, but I would say that ultimately the inherent master/servant dialogue of their professional relationship unseats any possibility of 'sharing everything with fun'. To whit, Dogtanian and Planchets's employer/employee status fundamentally prevents any chance of any truly meaningful sharing of anything whatsoever with fun, let alone 'ev'rything'.

Therefore, and as such, I put it to you that despite any underlying altruism at the heart of Dogtanian's actions, he is, fundamentally, a colossal mahometan.

the worst bit for me was the frenetic energy of the dubbed english voices trying to keep within the movements of the animated mouths
it all felt so rushed, and those reaction vocalisations like 'huh?!' noises he always made seemed really false so I couldn't engage emotionally with the plot
(, Sun 30 Mar 2025, 9:33, Reply)
A counter argument to this might perhaps be that the struggle of the overdub artists to synch with the original voice track is itself emblematic of the challenges of dogs attempting to live as humans in C18th France.

(, Sun 30 Mar 2025, 9:38, Reply)
fucking weird argument if so
how is it emblematic exactly?

also voice leonardo and rocksteady in tmnt
(, Sun 30 Mar 2025, 9:48, Reply)
Yeah?
Well David Collings (4 June 1940 – 23 March 2020) was an English actor. In an extensive career he appeared in many roles on stage, television, film and radio, as well as various audio books, voiceovers, concert readings and other work. He garnered a following through his numerous appearances in cult sci-fi series such as Doctor Who, Sapphire & Steel and Blake's 7, as well as dubbing the titular character in the series Monkey and Legolas in the classic BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

I rest my case.

I just didn't understand why he couldn't learn to slice that apple up neatly with his sword
Every week he'd make an amateurish mess of it *again.* I believed growing up would be a process of finally learning to go swishyswishychipchop in midair and the apple would fall in elegant, perfect slices like you were the coolest mf ever to get their apple-slicing shit together. boys and girls would swoon helplessly. you'd just side-eye the world like *sheesh, of course, no biggie* and run off with the best-looking one. Now, a life lived, and I realise that slicing the apple up badly isn't a stage, isn't an escapable situation. it's what we are, who we are. I throw another apple up into the air. It hovers indefinitely, beyond time. Maybe this week, I tell myself. I start to slice

Perhaps we are all, ourselves, merely apples aloft in life's great Dogtanian opening sequence.
Just wending our haphazard way along life's great path. Not unlike Porthos' smeggy gunt, swaying in the Parisian breeze.
