that was the issue; the cable had popped off one of the two clamps
so I had to actuate the lever from underneath, which is what the crowbar was for.. Not easy with a 3-litre engine plus all the accessories in the way.

I've been told to be careful with pugs though as a lot use mad French threads and then you're limited to all French parts.
