# Usually I would agree that it's best not to provoke these things
But this level of sensitivity is just ridiculous, and needs to be challenged.

On the subject of which, I urge everyone to go and see Four Lions, it's very funny

# I think the my point is that this project is offensive to EVERYONE of that faith
regardless of their leanings, stance of viewpoint. Being a cunt to an entire religion on the account of the actions of a minority of its adherents is just a bit scatter-shot for me.

# let's not challenge the BNP's values
after all, most of their supporters are ordinary people with homes, jobs and families

it's only a minority who actually beat up blacks
(, Thu 20 May 2010, 10:16, archived)
# Why do you keep going back to the BNP?
What have they got to do with this?
(, Thu 20 May 2010, 10:18, archived)
# they're a comparable bunch of nutters with popular support
why is everyone so scared of offending Islam? How come they get a free pass?

# you've got 2 dogs in front of you
a springer spaniel who's just eaten and is sat out in the sun all content, and a mastiff who has been kicked and abused, not fed and eally wound up.
Jabbing at both of them with a stick will get different results, the spaniel will probably ignore you for being a silly pest. The Mastiff will snap and try and kill you.

Now if you'd tried to calm the mastiff, feed it, show it you are a friend, feed it again, put it in the nice warm sun, then maybe it won't react to that jabby stick.

You can draw pictures of mohammed, and everyone should be able to take a joke, but some people just aren't in the frame of mind to laugh. So until the mastiff is fed and rehabilitated, jabbing it is a slightly silly thing to do in my eyes.

# aw poor Islam
let's all spare a thought for the muslims upset online by the nasty pictures

/goes back to photoshopping zombie jesus pics

# if we did and tackled the situation
then I'm sure we'd be drawing as many funny zombie mohammed pictures as we do jesus ones.
Being a cunt to some upset people is just being a cunt, its not fixing the situation.

# I really don't think I'm being a cunt
my drawing of Mohammed (below) doesn't contain a pig, or a cock or the goatse man's arse replacing his mouth - it's just a drawing of a man

you've posted far worse about, for example, the Tories, a group of people with far less abhorrent views fundamentalist Islam - after all not even they condone the stoning to death of rape victims. Does that make you a cunt?
(, Thu 20 May 2010, 10:54, archived)
# to be honest I hadn't seen your picture
I was refering to the people who are deliberately setting out to be a cunt, the film maker that did the gaybar thing, the facebook groups encouraging as much offence as possible. Your picture ironically is exactly what should be done and what I was refering to about positive paintings elsewhere.

As for the tories, yes, they've affected me directly so I feel I have a good reason to depict them in a satirical way. Mohammed hasn't done anything himself so I don't see the point. Suicide bombers and fundamentalists have which is why I have drawn them in the past.

# but by that logic, anyone who behaves in a threatening manner should be fed and rehabilitated.
shirley?

I know where you're coming from though, I was bullied at school, by a kid who'd most likely been kicked and abused for most of his life. I don't know how much lunch money I handed over to him, pens, paper, he took my watch and tried to sell it back to me for a fiver, then threatened me with death if I told any of the teachers. Didn't make him my friend, even though sometimes I tried to chat to him, find common ground. He still always found yet another thing about me that he saw as worth hurting me for.

# he probably had deep unresolved homosexual feeling toward you
But yes, resolve the situation then all share the joke is the ideal outcome. Problem is some people will always want to kick off, be it over religion, nationality, football team, whatever. They just pick the easiest excuse be a cunt to others.

# You're probably right, I have quite a purty face.
and, yes, I agree, a lot of crusaders jump on the latest bandwagon for bashing some group they don't belong to. In this case, I think it's a complicated matter involving an almost "religious" value in America, the right to freedom of speech, versus a religious value. I think it's valid to protest against infringements of freedom of speech, personally, whether the people trying to infringe it are religious or not.

Who will win?

I don't know. Please don't fight.

# I'm saying that there's a core of extremists who cause trouble
and there are a lot of "ordinary" people who don't cause trouble but support the extremists' views
(, Thu 20 May 2010, 10:31, archived)
# no that's bollocks.
the BNP is a party based purely on extremist and racist views. Its supporters, whilst not all personally committing extremist acts still support the party's inherent racist outlook. The majority of muslims do not support violence or islamic extremism. Islam, like most religions, is fundamentally based on well intentioned values and the majority of its followers are decent people. However like any religious text the Quran is open to interpretation and abuse. Fundamentalism is dangerous in any religion and saying that all muslims support violent extremism is the same as saying all christians support the "god hates fags" brigade. You cannot draw comparisons between an entire faith and an extremist minority party.

# I've talked with so-called "moderate" Muslims who as soon as you mention Salman Rushdie
say "Oh, of course he should die for what he said, it's unforgivable" and BNP voters with more black friends that I have.

Just because Islam's a religion doesn't mean that it doesn't have some pretty abhorrent ideas at its core. I've read the Koran and every other chapter mentions that unbelievers should die by sword and fire. It's right there in their manifesto, and there's always going to be a percentage of "ordinary" muslims who support that.
(, Thu 20 May 2010, 11:04, archived)
# Not really, though
Much like Christianity, the vast majority support the core values and beliefs of the Koran, but accept that times move on and some of its teachings are outdated and impractical. I really don't think that the entire muslim following will be ready to burn your flag if you draw a picture of their prophet, but a few do, and if that's deemed offensive to them, then...fair enough, really. Much like I wouldn't condemn my fried for believing in abstinence.

There are a few extremists who do take things to far, but the majority don't. I understand free speech, and how important that is to the western world, but I also believe in respect, and I'm not sure making a huge thing out of this is entirely cool. No, we shouldn't be stopped if we want to draw a picture of Mohammed, then again it seems pretty rude to take it to this kind of extreme.

I'm talking about turning the whole board into some kind of hate-shrine. It's a pretty extremist response, really...

This is truly an extremist response on a par with the 7/7 bombings, or the burning of embassies. I had no idea we were so dangerous.

the letter I wrote to him did have a rather leftfield suggestion

I want him to make the Queen Mother the patron saint of pot-holing. I've told him that the people of Britain have lost faith in the Catholic church because of the kid-bumming thing, and this is the only way to placate us. If he could announce it on his arrival to the UK this year, I thought, that would be the best approach.
