# that's bee-utiful. does blender allow you to animate such things?

animate tile

# Yes I would have to do all the rigging though.
Same as with the hedgehog one I did
(, Sun 25 Mar 2012, 13:01, archived)
# I'd love to try something like that. I played around with an open-source application called Pov-Ray...
It was very labour-intensive. That scared me away from CG.

# Blender is getting better all the time
and people like Andrew Price at www.blenderguru.com and also Blender Cookie at cgcookie.com/blender/ do some great starter tutorials. Blender has particle systems like hair (as in my bee) smoke and fire, plus water/liquid also has air and wind dynamics and loads of stuff you can only find on the big licensed 3D software. It's even got Camera tracking now so you can load your own footage in and track makers make a camera solve and add your own 3D elements like in the Hedgehog clip. Well worth it after all it's not like you have to pay even a penny to get started.

# I think with pov ray you can do anything, but you have to do everything
still you can script the shit out of it like anything else

must hunt out the ancient thing it's based on and render spheres over chessboards and similar 1989 style graphics

blender scares me, it's like

I ran away in terror not knowing what to press.

/in the process of downloading shitload of daz3d stuff as it's free for the next few days blog

Bryce + network rendering it seems
Hexagon - which seems to be a pure modelling package
and daz3d - all of which I have no idea about

https://www.daz3d.com/

Dunno if anyone cares but it's all there if anyone wants to snarf it today.

also, as I just had dindins and am feeling fluffy, for those who haven't heard of it, I think this http://hugin.sourceforge.net/tutorials/index.shtml might be really helpful for taking real world things and making them into textures, eg http://hugin.sourceforge.net/tutorials/perspective/en.shtml

# A lot of these tutorials are great
I am struggling to find stuff for technical modelling as I want to send some stuff to www.shapeways.com/ , effectively using Blender as a CAD tool. Do you know anywhere than can help?

Also, woo to your bee and hedgehog.
(, Sun 25 Mar 2012, 13:34, archived)
# You mean tutorials to use Blender as a CAD?
I'm sure they exist not sure where to get that specific kind of tutorial though. there are pug ins that come packaged with Blender for accurate measurements etc. As for realistic rendering Blender now comes with the Cycles render engine which can be very photo realistic, plus you can use Luxrender and other such 3rd party renderers which give very good highly professional renders.

# '...it's not like you have to pay even a penny to get started.'
That's what i like to know. I would hate shelling out money for something I might not like -- especially since I only photoshop human faces onto cats for pleasure, not profit :P.

# Yep 100% opensource software you can donate to Blender.org if you feel inclined but there is no obligation.

# That's the intention - shouldn't be too hard to rig
although the mesh is quite detailed so rendering each frame could be a pain.

# I thought that too
I was going on a few source pictures of bee anatomy which was gruesomely sectioned from real bees yuck but I wasn't 100% sure about the exact proportions and kind of figured maybe bees without their fur look like flying ants.

# Just enjoying the learning process at the moment
I suppose I could a lot more detailed texture mapping, lighting and stuff like Ambience Occlusion passes, Alpha Pass and such to make things more visually better.
