Oh boo hoo, it needed a bit of thought to understand it, the Space Jockey wasn't what you thought it was, and it wasn't a prequel that ended exactly five minutes before Alien.

To be fair, though, the ending was pants.

There's a difference between "I didn't get this at first but appreciated it more with thought because it asked a lot of me" and "I didn't get this at first and appreciated it less with thought because it was ill-conceived, poorly-scripted, half-arsed monkey-toss that cannot stand the critical weight of even passing consideration". it's mainly when people judge it in comparison to the its own hype and the first two movies that it seems poor.

I haven't actually seen it personally, but I'm sure it can't be as big a turd as Aliens 3...

but I heard it was ok-ish when considered in its own right. Having said that, I mainly despise 3 on the basis of its beginning, which makes the whole brilliant story arc of Aliens pointless.
