# Nice!
TJ - usb1 and usb2 are they backwards and forwards compatible?
(, Mon 1 Sep 2003, 16:06, archived)
# well
usb 1 works in both 1 + 2 type ports at usb 1 speed.

usb 2 works at usb 2 speed in usb 2 ports, but at usb 1 speed in usb 1 ports

# cheers,
thats what i hoped

# usb1.1
is backwards compatible, so will generally work with everything, although you might have to turn off USB2.0 functionality with some older USB1.1 peripherals. USB2.0 is only compatible with USB 2.0 products... Although some will work at a slower speed in USB 1.2 sockets.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

# if a product supports usb 2
it should support usb 1.1 at least, else it misses a big chunk of the market.

(, Mon 1 Sep 2003, 16:10, archived)
# true
but there are some older peripherals that won't work unless you turn off USB 2.0 functionality, like 1st gen webcams and the like. That's what I heard, anyway

# you'll be right there

# In order to actually be USB2.0
they must comply with the USB specifications, therefore they must be compatible with USB1.1. There probably are some corners cut, and if you can, avoid ALi USB ports. They suck arse. got to www.usbman.com for lots of info. Very useful and free.

# there's devices
designed to take advantage of USB2 that can't work on USB1 or 1.1 due to the reduced bandwidth... that's why they make new standards
