kept outside in rabbit-style hutches, fed on dry cat food and exercised daily in runs. They were stinky, but if you keep them as pets I hear you can have their scent glands removed

but I don't think it smells bad. It's kind of skunky, but very faint, and only is amplified if she gets wet, like during a bath. Thier scent glands go on overload then !

But the phrase is such a common one that even I'm in the habit of using it sometimes without thinking, and when I do realise I can never think of a suitable replacement- want to help me out?

That gets used inappropriately all the time, but we mostly learn meanings from usage, and I struggle with that one too. I've looked it up many, many times, and still can't quite figure out proper context
