it's the only way to get better.
However, don't go copying anime shit, or anybody else's style, for that matter.
Draw what you feel - draw from life.

# my art teachers were unemployed painters who smoked dope in the darkroom.
Sometimes they'd forget to show up to classes.

not that they didn't show me a thing or two.

This guy was one of my painting teachers, who got me over my very fussy, illustrative habits..
fifteen years ago he was doing these massive, aggro oil paintings but now he's doing piss-awful watercolours

# you should start using the age old
circle oblong oblong method to get the right shapes then go over it with finer detail
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:08, archived)
# I use a different method that I learnt from a book
can't describe it. Basically start off with an oval, and add some more basic lines. And for the frontal view, use a cross. Yeah.

# draw things that exist, either real life, or from photos
figure out proportions
sketch the shape before adding final details
use a decent pencil on unlined paper
practise

and trust me on the sunscreen
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:04, archived)
# I tried that once
and got bored. The thing is I don't have enough time either. I drew these when I got bored in a lesson, going through stuff I knew. All my spare time at home is spent working revising, or pissing about on here cause I am too tired to do anything else.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:07, archived)
# when i was bored at school
i'd spend my time drawing my desk, including my hand drawing the drawing of my desk

i'd draw other people in the class

i'd draw the woodgrain of the desk
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:09, archived)
# Yeah. Well.
Ok. I'm really shit at drawing actual stuff. And seeing as I'm the scientist type, I don't think I'll get much better, which is why I like drawing fantasy stuff.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:12, archived)
# hey!
just listen to Mictoboy - it's good advice, you have to work at anything you want to improve at.

# I just don't like the idea of hard work :(
It's quite bad really.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:17, archived)
#
"seeing as I'm the scientist type" is meaningless shite. i've got a phd (in SCIENCE, BABY) and i'm still dicking around drawing shite pictures, and i believe i get a tiny bit better with each picture i draw. i'm still crap but i'm getting better with each one and i believe i'll end up actually being half-decent.

"drawing fantasy stuff" is a way of saying "i don't think i'll be good enough", which is just another way of giving up. do. not. give. up.

# If you're trying to draw figures...
I highly *highly* suggest getting an artists reference book of nude figures. I got one off of amazon for about a tenner. Would link you but I can't find it.

I always struggle when drawing figures but the book I got is bloomin' marvellous! It really helps with the understanding of the shapes of the body and shading.

Also, practice, experiment and have fun.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:14, archived)
# ^this
drawing things shouldn't be work, there's not much point learn to art unless you're having fun with it.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:21, archived)
# I did have a book that explained how to draw
figures in fantasy type stylee. Which is what I like drawing. Fuck knows where I've left it.
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:21, archived)
# Before you can make figures anything, eg fantasy figures...
You've got to have an understanding of the body and how it looks.

I would recommend looking at real figures and poses to become familiar with bodies before you try to customise them into a genre.

# i'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination
but if you're looking to draw cartoons, i think the best thing to do is find a shape that you like drawing and start making that your style. my favourites on here for people drawings are happy toast and the we are the lemon, they have really distinctive styles and their characters are instantly identifiable
(, Mon 21 Apr 2008, 23:17, archived)
# Ah this is just some random trying to draw well shit.
I have a distinct character set for me cartoons.

Or failing that, sketch your basic body shape first and use that as a guide to the final piece.
