# just been on /talk
it looks like this:

quick question: ATI or Nvidia?

edit: edited so the /talk pedants don't blow a blood vessel because i missed out a forward slash
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:30, archived)
# Nvatidia!!
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:33, archived)
# thanks
that was a /talk style response
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:34, archived)
# I avoid talk, they frighten me.
Typically though I have had irritating little probs with ATI so probably nvidia.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:36, archived)
# i used to go with ATI
and had loads of trouble. now i've got an nVidia mobo and graphics card and it runs like a dream.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:36, archived)
# so far,
Nvidia three, ATI nil.

and lots of stupid shit from that other place

edit: i seem to recall having problems with ATI drivers as well
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:37, archived)
# It actually doesn't really matter.
The two companies are really quite evenly matched. It's not like AMD and Intel where one side is steamrolling the other.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:42, archived)
# ATI = AMD
Sort of, and AMD may already have binned ATI.
For some reason ATI only hires idiots. NV on
the other hand is filled with idiots from top down.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:45, archived)
# I KNOW
but i'm talking graphics cards. AMD is doing pretty bad at processors at the moment, but AMD/ATi is doing fine with graphics cards
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:46, archived)
# ATI hardware(not oem) post Rage has been good, yes.
Drivers, however, have not been good since before that time (2000ish?).
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:49, archived)
# thanks
nvidia it is then....

www.ebuyer.com/product/150605/show_product_specifications?spectype=extended
looks interesting...anyone understand any of it?

and yes, about forty quid is the extent of my post-christmas budget
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:49, archived)
# Well, what are you using it for?
If it's for (new) video games, then it's not a good card to buy. But everything else should be fine.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:51, archived)
# mostly not games
the games i do play aren't graphics-heavy.
CAD, video editing, and being able to play HD stuff through my pc because it's cheaper than a HD-DVD player...my new hardware is up to it, but it came with a hole where the graphics card should be...
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:55, archived)
# yeah, should be fine then
really there's no way to know exactly how your card is going to work out in your computer, but getting a balance of people's opinions is a good way to go about it i guess.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:01, archived)
# buggrit
that PNY card needs a 350w psu...

i only have 275w lump

fucking stupid dell shit, why stick a dual-core chip in a box with not enough power?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:03, archived)
# haha
because you bought a dell, that's why :(
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:05, archived)
# i was blinded by the gigs
and forgot the watt?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:07, archived)
# you watt?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 11:55, archived)
# the sack of shit pc i just junked
has a 400w psu...

and it won't fit in this slim case
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:06, archived)
# For some reason I have been mentally associating Nvidia more with OpenGL and ATI more with DirectX
but I can no longer remember why and am probably just wrong.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:10, archived)
# both are supported
like tits in a tech bra
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:12, archived)
# Well yes, but I think maybe NVidia were earlier supporters of OGL.
Or that might just have been my imagination. But it made me like them more, anyway.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:14, archived)
# a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away
i used to use ATI and it was good and so i stuck to them, but in recent years the driver updates (and shitty software they try and bundle with them) just cause loads of problems. I bought the cards for gaming and to be fair the graphics looked great...for the 20 seconds or so before it would crash.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:47, archived)
# Yeah, I know what you mean. I hate the catalyst control center. That's why I tend to just download the basic drivers and use Ray Adams's tray tools.
But there are similar stories on both sides - for instance, my 8800 GTS was terrible at running Source games for some reason, always crashing, and I never found drivers that worked properly with every game.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:49, archived)
# *remembers*
i bought an ATI card shortly after half life 2 came out because a) valve supposedly developed hl2 with ATI to make it super good and b) i'm a bit of a valve fanboy so wanted hl2 to look good when i played it so i thought getting an ATI would be a good move.

this was not the case

# The talk board upsets me a bit.
Every so often, I go on there and post a thread to the tune of: "You're a bunch of worthless cunts and I don't know why you bother", and the sods proceed to say nasty things to me!
Honestly!
Don't know why I bother.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 2:40, archived)
# Because you touch yourself at night.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:05, archived)
# No.
Having spent all day touching myself, I'm simply too exhausted to do it at night. I do this b3ta thang instead.
So I'm looking you straight in the eye, exhausted from touching myself, asking: "____ ___ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ __?"
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:22, archived)
# /talk
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:04, archived)
# why do you bother?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:12, archived)
# Personally, I can't photoshop to save my life.
The real question is why do you fear that which is different to you?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:19, archived)
# neither can i, but i do it anyway.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:21, archived)
# ditto
plus i like conversations that stay roughly within the confines of the theme of that conversation.

now, piss off and make yourself some cheese on toast
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:22, archived)
# and it's not fear
more like mild irritation
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:24, archived)
# probably soup time, ashally.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:26, archived)
# RIS?
nvm...
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:30, archived)
# instead of cheese on toats, i'm eating soup.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:48, archived)
# o right.
i'm eating fags at the moment.
(did that make me sound gay?)
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:53, archived)
# no, it just makes you sound like you probably smell awful.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:59, archived)
# yes
and i smell of cigarette smoke.

# we'll never be sure of the true anatomy until we dissect them all.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:12, archived)
# by dissect
i assume you mean eradicate?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:14, archived)
# no, i mean cut into bits and examine.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:16, archived)
# by examine
i assume you mean 'stuff into bin bags and deposit on wasteground behind the five-a-side pitches'?
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:18, archived)
# well, yes.
but that's what i want for all humans.
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:20, archived)
# ATI?
I am having trouble determining why my 750MHz PIII slows down when I run SpybotS&D
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:22, archived)
# i think maybe
you answered your own question
my old AMD K6-2 used to slow down if my kids were playing football outside
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:28, archived)
# hahhahhhhahha
as above.
k6 (still runs one)
(, Sat 27 Dec 2008, 3:39, archived)
# still got my old machine
i'm gonna strip it out and use it as a fileserver as it's got a mahoosive hdd. and i'll re-use the fans to cool the xbox and it's two red lights.

yes i said fans. three of em (it was o-c'd by about 30%). i had to play death metal really loud to drown out the noise.
