opacity refers to the total amount that can be drawn in one stroke
if it's set to 50% for example, no matter how long you hold down the airbrush, you will only achieve 50% coverage :) (i never use it that way, in fact i've gone back to PS6 because it has a better airbrush)

psp8, i airbrush in a solid block of color for each major part on a different layer (face, hair, torso, body of guitar, so far), then on more layers i cheatingly trace in the details, which were originally supposed to be simple other blocks of colors, but i've started putting too much detail in.
